About Winery and Wines

Weingut Villa Hochdörffer is a gem set at the heart of the Südpfalz, a corner of Germany close to the French border that enjoys nothing more than bringing a dose of gourmet fun and hospitality into life’s daily tête-à-têtes. Working roughly 50 hectares of vines around the historic winegrowing village of Nussdorf, the Hochdörffer family has shown a fine touch for producing elegant, delicately fruity wines.

Or in the words of international wine journalist Paula Sidore: the wines pay testament to a “fine signature and subtlety” and are “notably concentrated on the essential.” And it’s a pleasure to explore them.

Wine has always been part of life for the Hochdörffer family. But it was Lieselotte and Hans who transformed wine from a small side venture into the primary business of a thriving estate — all within one generation.

The pair began expanding the estate piece for piece in 1981, working with 4 hectares, the cellar of their residence, and one old tractor.

The first new building constructed in town was, even by the time of its completion, already under-sized. And so in 1995 they built the current estate and villa out amidst the vines. And continuously expanded the portfolio of vineyards to feature some of the best parcels in the region.

How did they manage it? Boundless dedication, hard work, and an endless love for the winegrower’s craft.

Fine Pinot family wines and multifaceted Rieslings are the calling card of Villa Hochdörffer and the family’s grand love affair. The Hochdörffers are proud that this passion has spread beyond the borders of Germany, and can now be enjoyed by connoisseurs in the Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, and Japan as well.

DER FEINSCHMECKER magazine has for years counted Villa Hochdörffer among the finest estates in Germany, and its wines are recommended in Gault&Millau, Eichelmann, and VINUM as well. All of which has only inspired young winegrower David Hochdörffer to keep pushing higher and harder, translating the unique terroir of the Südpfalz ever more clearly in his wines.
