Stopped on our way from Maryland to...

Stopped on our way from Maryland to the Smokey Mountains for lunch. Great set of about 8 wines for tasting (could choose from sweet or dry) for $4.50. We then had a delicious lunch with a glass of our favorites. The menu had more than we expected, all very reasonable. Cute little store as well.

What a wonderful step back in time...

What a wonderful step back in time for a fast paced Northerner![Ohio] Five of us spent the afternoon and morning with the awesome folks at Rural Retreat Winery. The wine tasting is so fun and the owners are quite knowledgeable. We learned about all the types of grapes they grow to create their heavenly nectars. They have an apartment over the deli/sales floor for a very reasonable price that is spacious enough for a large family or up to three couples. Facilities are very clean and well kept and the service from the staff is A++. What an exquisite experience that none of us will soon forget. Thanks for the memories and we WILL see you soon! John Z is a wonderful host! Lots of stories and very informative! With the exception of the Cab Sav, they specialize in sweeter wines. All good wines, just too sweet for me. Worth the trip, however!

After some a lack of success with...

After some a lack of success with some other wineries that were closed, we ended up here. A bit out of the way but a generally good find. The tasting room is in what used to be a B&B. The tasting was informative with a nice flow through about 8 wines (give or take). The wines were decent. My favorites were the Syrah and the Virginia Red Table Wine. Apparently the table wine distinction gives the wine makers flexibility in the percentage of alcohol (+ or - 2% from the label) and to not list the blend of grapes that are used. As it was lovely weather, we had some glasses of wine on the patio. They also sell meat or cheese with toasted bread and some olive oil and balsamic. It's not fancy, but it complemented the wine as a nice snack. A local musician was hanging out on the deck and playing some music on his guitar. It became a gathering of 8+ local people hanging out on the deck on a generally quiet country road. One aspect of the experience that may be a little concerning for some relates to the area where the winery is located. This is in a rural area of Virginia. There is a local shooting range nearby (which I think we heard occasionally). One of the guests brought his/her target from the range to the winery deck to show others. Also, there was some conservative political discussions that could be upsetting to some guests. These aspects detracted from the wine experience.

Lovely place very laid back atmosphere. Went to a wine tasting event the price of admission was very affordable. The wine was of excellent quality. It was most enjoyable. They had a wide variety of wines and they tasted quite good. Even left with a bottle of Jericho. It was surprising that such a nice quaint winery was so close to me. The grounds are well maintained and they provided a hay ride to really see all the grape vines and scenery.

A small vineyard with a wide variety...

A small vineyard with a wide variety of wines, both red and white. My favorites are the Cabernet Franc and the Meritage, although the Pinot Noir and their other reds are nothing to sneer at. The Chard is also good and a bargain is the Tuscarora White. Nice folks, too! My go to winery. Join the wine club and get 30 percent off cases.
