Cluj-Napoca or Turda: Sighisoara Fortress & Wine Tasting in Dracula's backyard
Here is what's in store for you
Embark on a captivating full-day journey, departing from Cluj to the historic heart of Transylvania. Your day begins with a guided exploration of the remarkably preserved medieval citadel of Sighisoara, one of the few still-inhabited fortresses in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll trace the circumference of the fortress walls, admiring the nine remaining original defence towers, and explore the intricate, colourful medieval streets. The exploration includes ascending the historic Covered Staircase to reach the Church on the Hill and uncovering fascinating local legends, including the captivating tales connected to Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the Dracula myth. After absorbing the history and enjoying free time, lunch at a local restaurant sets the stage for the afternoon's sensory experience.
Following lunch, the experience transitions into the scenic heart of the Transylvanian wine region. The picturesque drive takes you across the rolling plains and past colourful Saxon villages of the Tarnava area, renowned for its cool-climate viticulture. Here, you will be treated to a sensory exploration during a premium wine tasting session. Guests will indulge in tasting seven distinct wine varieties, including high-acid, aromatic white wines characteristic of the region, such as Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, and Riesling. The tasting is expertly paired with palate cleansers. The wines benefit from the Tarnava River's unique terroir, resulting in fresh, crisp flavours with distinct floral and fruity notes, a tradition sustained since the Middle Ages by Saxon settlers.
What makes this experience truly special is the perfect blend of profound history and authentic local flavour. This tour connects the dots between Transylvania's iconic medieval past—symbolized by Sighisoara's historic streets and towers—and its hidden viticultural excellence. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to not only walk in the footsteps of medieval figures and legendary tales but also to taste the high-quality, aromatic white wines born from this specific, cool-climate terroir, offering a genuine and memorable immersion into the region's diverse cultural heritage.
