About Winery and Wines

The baglio Assuli is the result of a slow and accurate renovation of an old XVIII century baglio. It was built respecting the original criteria to create a new economically efficient structure. A wide multifunctional space that extends for 10.000 m² surrounded by the countryside. Natural materials have been used to furtherly underline the strong connection with the land, the Marsala tuff, the Perlato Sicilia Cofano® and Riviera Beige® marbles from Custonaci, the traditional Sicilian Coppi, to create a structure perfectly aligned with nature, where both simple and complex shapes offer an unparalleled elegance. A modern and BIO certified winery, where the most innovative technologies are used, and environment and land care policies are followed.

Assuli vineyards are located in the heart of Western Sicily between Mazara del Vallo and Trapani, with a mild and breezy climate at altitudes from 100 to 600 meters above sea level. About 130 hectares of land mainly suited for the indigenous grape varieties like Nero d’Avola, Zibibbo, Insolia, Lucido, Grillo, Perricone, but also perfect for the well-known Syrah. Together with the Istituto Vite Vino of Marsala that allowed the research on 14 relic vines, Assuli has dedicated a plot – 600 grafts in 600 implants in 0,3 hectares of land – to improve the growth of specific varieties in an organic experimental vineyard. The Sicilian relic vines tell the ancient history of the Sicilian wine, each variety represents the land on its own way. For example, the term “Vitrarolo”, which vines are cultivated in limited amount in the Nebrodi mountain area with very harsh climate, comes from the vitreous appearance of the branches that in winter become almost glassy and break easily. A way to further underline the connection with the land, knowing that its indigenous grape varieties and the safeguard of the extraordinary biodiversity are the future of Sicilian viticulture.
