Best vineyard tour we have seen in Campania in two years!!!

1/1/24
The Verrone family has the best vineyard tour we have ever been on! They open up their historical family estate, which is the largest in the Cilento area, and the wines are second to none. We've lived in Campania now for over a year and toured a lot of vineyards, with none of them even comparable to Verrone. Paolo, the owner, and his son were our hosts for two different tours (purchase on Winedering and book in advance). He is extremely knowledgable on the whole process and is steeped in the history of the place. I cannot recommend this tour and meeting the Verrone family enough!
Visit the castle as part of the tour. It is magnificent!

About Winery and Wines

The passion for wine-making and the search of the best cultivation techniques with a reduced level of pollution characterize Verrone Viticoltori winery, founded by Antonio Verrone in 1967.

He went to making wine on his terraced vineyards in Agropoli, Cilento Coast, Campania Region, about a 45 minute drive from the city of Salerno.

Antonio Verrone, helped by his two sons Paolo and Massimo, welcome guests from all around the world for tastings and meals on his terrace overlooking the vineyards, the bay of Agropoli and the gulf of Salerno.

A visit to Verrone Viticoltori will be the highlight of any trip in Cilento!

Antonio Verrone vinery sits on over twenty hectares of land and from 1967 to 2001 he began the very tall task of reworking the land and replanting vines.

The property of Verrone Viticoltori historically was home to wine production. In 1967 Antonio planted Aglianico and Fiano, two indigenous varietals from Campania. He makes more or less thirty thousand bottles of wines Aglianico and Fiano. His wines are aged in a very unique cellar.

Looking at the vineyard, you notice Antonio Verrone takes this fact very seriously, having a maximum respect for the land and thus producing nice wines. The vineyard is a botanical garden of sorts showing off all the local flora of Cilento, from olive trees and more.

In 1967 Antonio Verrone decided to plant exclusively grape varieties typical of his territory, so as to give a unique characteristic and hence a strong personality to his wines. The first vineyards of Aglianico and Fiano were planted in 1967 with a density of about 4,000 vines/hectare, while the latest date back to 2001, with a density of 4,500 vines/hectare.

The main estate of Antonio Verrone, named “Tenuta Girapoggio”, extends over twenty hectares of marvellous landscape that rises over the hills of the National Park of Cilento, in the town of Agropoli (Province of Salerno – Campania Region), at a height of 150 meters above the sea level. The soil is clay and limestone, so called “flysch” of Cilento, and the exposure is North, West and South.

Another historical estate, named “Tenuta of the Rocca Cilento Castle”, extends over two hectares around the ancient Castle of Rocca Cilento (Province of Salerno – Campania Region), at a height of 650 meters above the sea level. The soil is clay and limestone, so called “flysch” of Cilento, and the exposure is North, West and South. The first vineyards of Fiano were planted in 1967 with a density of about 4,000 vines/hectare.

The wines, exclusively produced with grapes harvested from these vineyards, are high quality cru from Cilento that express the unique character and the strong personality of this territory.

The manual harvesting of the grapes and their immediate transport to the cellar allow for a qualitative selection of the bunches and to keep them intact until the moment of shelling of the grapes.

The separation of the must from the skins takes place in a soft and integral way, for a complete extraction of the essential varietal characteristics.

The temperature is controlled in the stages of fermentation, refinement and in all the subsequent stages of processing of the wines in the cellar.

The care dedicated to the vineyards and to the entire processing cycle in the cellar allows us to obtain structured, complex, but at the same time elegant wines, which express the character and strong personality typical of these lands, a perfect synthesis of territory, grape variety and hand of the 'man.
