About Winery and Wines

The origins of Santa Lucia date back to 1628 when “Marc’Antonio Perrone earned 60 annual ducats of feudal revenue above the town of Quarati“. Quarati is modern-day Corato, where on the Santa Lucia estate, located at about 350 m above sea level, one fi nds the selected clones of local vines from the Murgia area. Murgia is the area in the foothills of Castel del Monte, the famous octagonal Norman feudal lodge commissioned by the Swabian Emperor Federico II. The year 1822 saw the drawing up of the plans for the “casino“ (mansion, in local slang), used as a shelter for people, animals as well a farm tools some of which are on display in the main room of the mansion today. The oldest blueprint for the vineyard dates back to 1849 and now hangs in the company offi ces for all to see.

The winery cultivates predominantly indigenous vines in the Santa Lucia vineyards which are to be found west of Corato at 300 m above sea level. These vineyards are Melograno, Santa Lucia, Tufaroli and Castigliola and they cover an area of just under 37 acres. The fi elds are surrounded by Coratina olive groves that produce Extra Virgin olive oil with a fruity and naturally spicy fl avour.
