Benguela Cove
About the Winery
Nestled along the breathtaking coastline of Hermanus in South Africa's renowned Hemel en Aarde region, Benguela Cove is where entrepreneurial vision meets winemaking excellence. Founded by Penny Streeter OBE, an accomplished entrepreneur with a passion for creating world-class experiences, the estate represents the perfect marriage of tradition, innovation, and sustainability.
Our 2.7-kilometre stretch of ocean-facing vineyards sits a mere three metres above sea level, where Walker Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. This unique position creates an exceptional cool-climate terroir - vines basked in sunshine yet cooled by maritime winds, growing from diverse soils including chalk, sandstone, iron-rich cobblestone, and Cape granite. Planted between 2003 and 2007, our estate-grown varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, amongst others.
At Benguela Cove, we believe great wine is born not only of sun, soil, and vines - but of people. Our dedicated vineyard and cellar team, led by Johann, Jaco, and Michelle, combines expertise with a deep respect for nature, ensuring every bottle captures our estate's distinctive character. Beyond the cellar, chefs Jean and Christo craft unforgettable culinary experiences that complement our award-winning wines.
The estate's story is beautifully symbolised by the swallow - representing the Streeter family's enduring connection between South Africa and England, a migration of culture, values, and tradition. This commitment to excellence extends to our sister properties in West Sussex, including Leonardslee Gardens and Vineyards.
Our dedication to crafting exceptional cool-climate wines has earned international acclaim, positioning Benguela Cove as one of the world's finest vineyards. Every visit offers immersive experiences - from intimate tastings to guided vineyard tours - where guests discover the passion, skill, and creativity that transform our grapes into unforgettable wines.
About the Wines
Our Wines
At Benguela Cove, every bottle tells the story of our unique terroir - a tale written by cool Atlantic breezes, diverse soils, and the dedicated hands of our winemaking team led by Head Winemaker Johann Fourie. His philosophy is elegantly simple: "To bridge the gap between the science and the artistry of making wine."
We craft our wines exclusively from estate-grown grapes, with various cultivars spread across the estate, including Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Semillon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Our 400-tonne gravity-fed winery houses a thoughtful blend of traditional and modern fermentation vessels - stainless steel, concrete eggs, and ceramic clay pots - allowing for meticulous vinification that honours each grape block's individual character.
