About Winery and Wines
Bodega Viña Santa Petronila – single vineyard. The smallest sherry winery in the world.
Over two thousand years ago, the land between the two rivers, Guadalquivir and Guadalete, formed the Tartessian Gulf and the Lake of Ligustino; an area of islands, peninsulas and channels. One of these channels became the Macharnudo Valley, emerging with glimpses of land with white albariza soil. This long-time flooded terrain, now partly marshland, formed the subsoil with saline water currents, despite being 12 km from the Atlantic coast. The vitis-vinifera root system allows its vines to feed on this water reserve and bear fruits with a remarkable vegetative balance whose resulting wine is unique.
Born, elaborated, and raised in this marine subsoil is Santa Petronila, located on the west slope of the soft hillside of the Macharnudo Valley; its vineyards are as old as the neighboring city of Gades. Santa Petronila - The Smallest Sherry Winery in the World, an intimate family vineyard, with a history prior to 1722. A tour of the winery invites guests to understand the wine growing and the work in the vineyards during the 18th and 19th centuries. A wonderful place to learn about the evolution from the Grapes to the Glass, and have an opportunity to taste the unique Sherry wines.
Santa Petronila is a combination of history and innovation: a Sherry made from and in the vineyard; old vines with deep roots offering stability, transmitting the power of the Palomino grape to its wines, manual harvesting, fermentation in casks and a traditional process with minimal artificial interference. The result is a unique Sherry “in Rama”, unfiltered and without clarification, with strong personality and character. A Sherry made from nature, helped by human effort and care; an Author's Sherry.
The Estate also features a guest-house where it is possible to stay overnight; ideal for celebrating meetings and events Its idyllic location in the middle of the vineyards, yet only 4km from the center of Jerez, 15km from the beaches in Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlúcar, and just over an hour from Tarifa, the gateway to Africa, makes it a unique place to enjoy with family and friends.
