CASA BALAGUER

Winery in Alicante, Valencia

About the Winery

Casa Balaguer's project began in late 2008, in a small rented warehouse on an industrial estate in Villena. We started with just 5 hectares of vineyards, producing three wines.

In 2018, we had the opportunity to acquire a beautiful 19th-century estate. Since its founding around 1850, Casa Balaguer was conceived as a complete agricultural organism, cultivating the fertile lands of the Vinalopó River valley. Alongside grapes, they also grew the other elements of the famous Mediterranean triad, cereals, olive trees and vines, which, together with almond trees and various fruit trees, shaped the estate’s agricultural diversity.

This more holistic approach to farming profoundly shaped our spirit and, together with our love of nature, awakened a strong interest in biodynamic agriculture. We firmly believe in the power of diversity and, since taking over the estate, we have reintroduced dozens of local varieties, revived cereal growing and olive farming, created a home for our animals, donkeys, goats, geese, and chickens and transformed the entire property to biodynamic cultivation.

Our mission, therefore, is to return Finca Casa Balaguer to its original glory, as it was centuries ago: a self-sustaining agricultural organism, in perfect balance with nature, crafting vibrant wines from living soils. Will you help us achieve it? Join the change and come visit us. We’ll be waiting with open arms!

About the Wines

At Casa Balaguer, we farm 40 hectares of polyculture, combining vineyards, olive groves, cereals, almond trees and fruit trees, all grown under organic and biodynamic farming. This ensures a lower presence of pests and diseases affecting the vine and allows us to produce wines that are healthier and more respectful of the environment. We are committed to reviving traditional varieties that are now almost extinct, thereby protecting and preserving a viticultural heritage that has been on the brink of disappearing—safeguarding it for future generations who live in our region.  We are also fortunate to manage and work an old, pre-phylloxera, own-rooted Moscatel de Alejandría vineyard in the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de La Mata.

The soils at Casa Balaguer are alluvial, formed by the historic course of the Vinalopó River, with up to three different textural soil types and a significant calcareous component. The estate lies 50 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea, in the Villena–Beneixama Valley, at 550–650 metres above sea level. This soil diversity allows us to craft a wide range of wine profiles, able to satisfy all types of consumers from more ethereal, fruit-forward wines to deeper, more complex expressions.

By contrast, the soils in the Natural Park of Las Lagunas de La Mata are marine siliceous sands and sedimentary marine materials. These soils are ideal for the cultivation of Moscatel de Alejandría and, together with the sea breezes, they shape the quality and freshness of the wines, providing a crisp, balanced acidity, enhanced by the natural salinity of the environment.

At Casa Balaguer, we believe the absolute protagonist of a wine is the grape. There is a reason why we work all year round to keep our soils and vines healthy: to achieve the highest possible quality in our fruit. That said, freshly harvested grapes and their fermentation can yield a product that is still slightly unfinished. Like anything in its infancy, wine needs time to mature and be ready for its true drinking window. That is why we are very selective about how we age our wines, always seeking materials that allow them to develop and shine on their own, without losing an ounce of personality: wooden barrels, stainless-steel tanks, concrete vats, glass demijohns, and clay amphorae.

Perfect!
We received a very warm welcome and had plenty of time to meet the animals. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the animals are truly valued and treated with respect, just like the surrounding nature.

The wines are exceptional and unique. The tasting was perfectly organized, with delicious snacks, their own olive oil, and fascinating stories about this organic winery. We highly recommend visiting! We were delighted to take several of these wonderful wines home with us.
