Castellani Michele & Figli
(Winery in Valpolicella, Amarone, Valpolicella Classica)
About Winery and Wines
Over sixty years ago, the foundations for the Michele Castellani Winery were laid with dedication and passion. Since then, the winery has continuously pursued innovation in both product and process. Today, Sergio Castellani, together with his wife Maria, leads the family business, overseeing every stage of the winemaking process. Their children, Michele in the cellar, Martina in administration, and Mara in commercial and foreign relations, are integral to the operation. The winery has achieved national and international recognition, solidifying the success of its vision.
Founded in 1945 in Valgatara by Michele, the original small "laboratory" has evolved into a modern winery with around 40 hectares of vineyards, a combination of owned and directly managed land. This transformation was made possible through significant investments in both the vineyard and modern equipment by Michele’s successors.
The winery places great importance on the meticulous selection, harvesting, vinification, and aging of the renowned wines of Valpolicella. Special attention is given to the appassimento (drying) process for the production of Amarone and Recioto, using advanced facilities to maintain the health of the grapes and ensure their balanced maturation.
Combining traditional techniques with modern technology, the winemaking process follows a perfect balance of old and new. Large oak barrels sit alongside barriques, creating wines that reflect a distinct sense of place with a contemporary interpretation. The result is a range of wines with clean, refined styles and pronounced personalities, showcasing the beauty of the territory and offering a fulfilling sensory experience to those who enjoy them.
The Castellani Michele Winery is committed to excellence, paying meticulous attention to every aspect of the winemaking process—from the careful selection and harvesting of grapes to vinification, drying, and aging, particularly for the renowned wines of Valpolicella. A great deal of passion and professionalism is dedicated to the appassimento process, which dries the grapes for Amarone and Recioto production. Modern facilities ensure the health of the grapes and carefully control their balanced and regular over-ripening, essential to achieving the distinct flavors these wines are known for.
The estate spans about 17 hectares of vineyards, either directly owned or cultivated, located in the hillside region of Valpolicella Classica. Most of the vines are trained in the traditional pergola system, with a few select vineyards cultivated using the Guyot method. The primary grape varieties grown include Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara.
A symbolic reflection of the winery’s balance between tradition and innovation is the new vineyard at Maso, situated in Negrar. This natural amphitheater, with its sunny south/southwest exposure and panoramic views from the Verona hills to Lake Garda, serves as an ideal showcase for the region’s finest wines. Additionally, the vineyards at Cà del Pipa and Castei in the heart of Valpolicella Classica are known for their high-quality soils and excellent viticultural conditions. These include ideal exposures, consistent ventilation, and well-balanced, nutrient-rich, and well-draining soils.
Each vineyard benefits from carefully chosen training systems tailored to the vine variety, such as the "pergoletta" for Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, and the guyot system for varieties like Oseleta and Croatina. Selective winter pruning, summer thinning, and precise timing for the harvest, based on the grapes' phenolic and aromatic maturity, enable the winery to gather grapes at their peak organoleptic potential. These practices ensure that the resulting wines reflect the best of what Valpolicella has to offer.
