About Winery and Wines
Castello di Gabiano, located in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, boasts a history that spans over a millennium. The estate covers 260 hectares, with 20 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Wine production at Gabiano is deeply rooted in tradition, with archives from the 13th century already documenting the quality of its grapes. Today, this heritage is complemented by modern oenological techniques, earning international recognition for the estate's unique and prestigious wines.
The estate is home to one of Italy’s oldest and smallest DOCs, the Gabiano Reserve "A Matilde Giustiniani", made from the finest Barbera grapes grown in a historic vineyard established by Princess Matilde Giustiniani herself.
Historical records dating back to the 8th century, including a document signed by Charlemagne, confirm the presence of the estate, then known as Cortem magnam nominam Gabianam. In 1164, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I granted the estate to Marquis Guglielmo II of Monferrato, and it remained a strategic and economic stronghold through the centuries, passing through various noble families.
Today, the estate is managed by the Marquises Giacomo Cattaneo Adorno and his wife Emanuela, who are deeply committed to capturing the essence of the terroir in their wines. Their dedication to quality, combined with modern winemaking expertise, ensures that the rich winemaking tradition of Castello di Gabiano continues to thrive.
The wines of Castello di Gabiano showcase the richness of the estate's terroir and centuries-old winemaking tradition. The portfolio includes RUBINO di Cantavenna DOC, Barbera d’Asti DOCG CASTELVERE, Monferrato Chiaretto DOC IL RUVO, Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC GAVIUS, Monferrato Rosso DOC CORTE, Monferrato Bianco DOC IL GIARDINO DI FLORA, Malvasia di Casorzo DOC A MATILDE GIUSTINIANI, Gabiano Riserva DOC ADORNES, Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOC CASTELLO, and Piemonte Chardonnay DOC.
The aging process takes place in cellars beneath the castle, which date back to the 1200s and were historically used for wine storage. These natural cellars were carved into the local rock, ensuring a constant temperature throughout the year—perfect for precise aging.
The barrique room is sectioned to allow for the careful fermentation of wines based on vintage and vineyard origin. The cellars also house a prestigious bottle collection, passed down through generations. With over four centuries of family involvement in winemaking, the estate covers 260 hectares, including 22 hectares of vineyards.
