Château du Grand Caumont
(Winery in Pays d'Oc, Languedoc)
About Winery and Wines
Château du Grand Caumont, located in the heart of the Corbières appellation, is a historic estate with roots tracing back to Roman times, originally known as "Villa Manzanetto." Passed down through generations, the château has been shaped by centuries of history, including being gifted by Charles the Bald in the 9th century and surviving the French Revolution in 1789. In 1906, Louis Rigal, founder of Rigal Roquefort, acquired the estate, and his family has managed it since, with Laurence Rigal now leading the winery. Surrounded by 100 hectares of vineyards on stony, terraced clay-limestone soils, Château du Grand Caumont produces elegant wines, a true reflection of the Corbières terroir. Combining her marketing expertise and deep passion for winemaking, Laurence is expanding the estate’s global reach, ensuring that these character-filled, aromatic wines are enjoyed by wine lovers worldwide. A visit to this estate offers an authentic journey through time, steeped in tradition and a genuine connection to the land.
At Château du Grand Caumont, the wines are a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, showcasing the finest qualities of the Corbières region. The vineyard boasts grape varieties typical of the appellation—Carignan Noir, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, and Vermentino—alongside Vins de Pays varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Marselan. The average age of the vines is 40 years, with some Carignan vines over 70 years old, harvested by hand and vinified whole to enhance their depth and complexity. The estate employs two vinification methods: full berry (carbonic maceration) for a fresh, fruit-forward profile, and traditional vinification for structured, rich wines. The result is a range of aromatic cuvées, bursting with fruit, spice, and silky tannins. Château du Grand Caumont's careful use of oak enhances the wines without overpowering their natural flavors, ensuring a balanced and elegant finish with excellent price-quality ratios. These are sunny, charming wines that capture the essence of the south of France.
