Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal

Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal (CAS) was founded in 1926 by Abel Pereira da Fonseca to manage his estates in the Bombarral area, in the DOC Óbidos (Lisboa wine region). Still owned by the same family, now in its fourth generation, the company has played a pioneering role in Portuguese viticulture. From the beginning, Abel Pereira da Fonseca introduced innovative practices such as planting single-variety vineyard plots, aligning and wiring vines, and experimenting with more than 30 grape varieties to study their adaptability.

Today, CAS manages around 100 hectares of vineyards across three estates—Quinta do Sanguinhal, Quinta das Cerejeiras, and Quinta de São Francisco—combining tradition with modern techniques. The estates also feature historic cellars, ageing facilities, and one of the oldest distilleries in the Lisboa region, along with traditional presses dating back to the 19th century. The company remains committed to producing wines, fortified wines, and spirits that reflect the identity and heritage of Portugal.

The wines of Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal express the diversity of the DOC Óbidos terroir, with a wide range of both indigenous and international grape varieties. Production includes red and white wines, as well as fortified wines and spirits, all crafted with a focus on quality and consistency.

Among the key labels are the “Quinta do Sanguinhal Grande Escolha” wines (red and white), alongside reserve wines such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Nacional with Petit Verdot, and Touriga Nacional with Syrah. White wines include blends and varietals like Arinto and Chardonnay, as well as lighter, more approachable styles such as Sôttal Lisboa Branco Leve.

The vineyards, planted on gentle clay-sandy slopes, allow for the cultivation of a broad spectrum of varieties—from Castelão and Aragonez to Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho—resulting in wines that balance structure, freshness, and aromatic intensity, while reflecting both tradition and innovation.
