Fonseca Port Wine Cellars
Über das Weingut
Fonseca is one of the most prestigious Port houses, with a history dating back to 1815 and a long-standing reputation for excellence and consistency. Over the centuries, the company has remained closely linked to both family ownership and the vineyards of the Douro Valley, which are central to the identity of its wines. Its three key estates—Cruzeiro, Panascal, and Santo António—play a fundamental role in shaping the distinctive character of its Ports.
Throughout its history, Fonseca has maintained a strong commitment to quality, even during challenging periods, earning recognition as one of the leading producers of Vintage Port. The house has also been a pioneer in sustainable and organic viticulture, becoming the first Port producer to release a wine made entirely from organically grown grapes. Today, it continues to combine tradition, craftsmanship, and innovation while preserving the unique ecosystem of the Douro Valley.
Über die Weine
Fonseca is best known for its exceptional Vintage Ports, considered among the most consistent and highly acclaimed in the world. Since the release of its first Vintage Port in 1840, the house has produced a succession of outstanding vintages, including iconic years such as 1868, 1927, 1948, 1977, and 1994—some of which have achieved perfect 100-point scores. These wines are renowned for their richness, depth, and remarkable ageing potential, maintaining freshness and complexity for decades.
In addition to Vintage Port, Fonseca produces a range of Ports that reflect its signature style—opulent, fruity, and full-bodied. Among these, Bin No. 27 stands out as one of the most popular and widely recognized reserve Ports, appreciated for its accessibility while still embodying the house’s characteristic intensity and balance.
Overall, Fonseca’s wines are distinguished by their power, elegance, and individuality, making them highly valued by collectors, connoisseurs, and wine lovers around the world.
