Magredo means “poor soil" it is poor because it is covered with a layer of weeds and bushes, requiring a small quantity of water and making it suitable to live in an extremely dry and permeable soil. This soil of alluvial origin was formed in the past centuries by the overflowing of the Cellina and Meduna rivers that carried downstream the debris coming from the Carnic Alps and created the alluvial fan. The name “I Magredi” describes the typical soil of this area, rich in coarse materials like gravel, stones, and pebbles. The water, together with the nutrients it contains, goes deep into the soil. Thanks to the poorness of the soil and the temperature variation, we can obtain grapes with great aromatic complexity and freshness. The estate was purchased by the owner’s father, Otello Tombacco, in 1968. It was originally planted with fruit and vines: peaches and apples were sold directly at the kiosk, and grapes were brought to Oderzo for vinification. From 1983 to 1986, the family gradually extended the acreage planted with vines and eliminated the peach and apple orchards. When the cellar was inaugurated in 1992, the capacity was 1 to 2 million litres. In 2000, 2003, and 2007, the acreage was extended and significant changes were introduced, which raised the processing capacity of the cellar to 4 to 5 million liters. After the investments made in 2018, the overall capacity reached 7 to 8 million litres. Our group has developed an approach to viticulture aimed at reducing the environmental footprint by using a training method that can reach a balance with the environment more rapidly and has a smaller production. By carefully studying the wood of our vines and training our staff in the pruning method, we are placing the longevity of our vineyards at the core of our vine-growing project, with the aim of obtaining a wine that is more and more balanced and typical of the terroir. Quality wines from Several Grapes We grow several grape varieties, ranging from the international Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Cabernet, to the native Friulano and Refosco, as well as Prosecco Doc. I Magredi wines stand out for their freshness, aromas, and elegance. The cellar boasts high-tech equipment to process the grapes and the musts and to age the wines: soft pressing, refrigeration systems, and aging in steel, cement, and wood. We also have a phyto-purification system to recover waste water. In 2003 a lab was created in order to carry out basic analysis during the different processing phases, such as Ph, sugars, volatile and total acidity, free and total sulphur dioxide, acid framework and other parameters providing immediate information on the wine condition. Thanks to the high tech equipment, we are able to perform about 300 analysis in a day.
