About Winery and Wines

La Canosa estate takes its name from Poggio Canoso, one of the four castles of Rotella, a small town in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the southern Marche region. Nestled among enchanting valleys and immersed in the tranquility of the Sibillini Mountains National Park, this land captivated young entrepreneur Riccardo Reina, who decided to embark on an ambitious viticulture project here.

The estate spans 100 hectares (247 acres), with 25 hectares (62 acres) of vineyards located in the heart of the Tesino Valley. Positioned on the 43rd parallel, a latitude particularly favorable for grape cultivation, the vineyards benefit from warm summers and frequent rainfall, thanks to Mount Ascension nearby. These ideal conditions foster the growth of high-quality grapes.

For Riccardo Reina, the choice to establish La Canosa in Rotella was deliberate, driven by the area's unique combination of favorable position, climate, and rich morphological features, as well as its ancient winemaking tradition. This project marks the first step in his vision to create a group of regional wineries dedicated to reviving and cultivating ancient indigenous grape varieties, showcasing the excellence of Italian wine regions.

La Canosa estate covers 110 hectares (272 acres) in total, with 50 hectares (123 acres) dedicated to vineyards. Situated on the 43rd parallel, an ideal latitude for grape growing, the vineyards stretch across the heart of the Tesino Valley, benefiting from a variety of exposures and altitudes, ranging from 350 to 600 meters. The vineyards' east-west orientation and warm summers, combined with frequent rainfall from nearby Mount Ascension, create perfect conditions for successful grape cultivation.

The unique temperature shifts between day and night throughout the year further enhance the quality of the grapes, allowing for the production of both local and international wines. The estate’s soil is typical of the Apennine ridge, with a mix of limestone and red clay, rich in minerals, offering the ideal balance of magnesium and potassium for optimal vine growth. Higher altitudes feature less deep soils, while the lower regions provide more depth and potassium-rich clay.

Each grape variety is carefully planted in a specific orientation to best suit its needs: Pecorino faces north at 500 meters, Sangiovese and Passerina face south at up to 580 meters, and Montepulciano faces southeast at 450 meters. This precise placement ensures a balanced ripening process, allowing each variety to express its terroir as faithfully as possible.
