Mas Oller

Winery in Catalonia, Empordà

About the Winery

Mas Oller is located in an area that combines sea and mountain, very marked by the presence of wind, and the north where a diversity of soils are combined: clay, sand and slate. Conceptually and geographically, the project of Mas Oller connects northern Catalonia, Empordà and Roussillon with the wines being as expressive as they are fresh. Currently, Mas Oller has 17 hectares of vineyard in production. The three red varieties are Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and two white varieties are Picapoll and Malvasia de Sitges. The vineyards are located around the house and the grapes are selected in the vineyard before being harvested and transported to the winery in small boxes, where it undergoes a second manual selection. All of the wines have a cold pre-fermentation period to obtain maximum expression of aroma and color. Our philosophy is based on the recovery of the winemaking tradition of Empordà with a modern interpretation of the concept of wine.

UNDER THE NORTHERN WIND

The influence of the Tramuntana on the wines of Empordà is fundamental. This north wind creates an ideal microclimate, with its freshness and dryness that cleanses the air and regulates temperatures. This results in healthy vineyards and ripe grapes with complex flavors and aromas. The Tramuntana also contributes to a daily thermal amplitude, favoring balanced ripening. This essential wind adds a unique dimension to the terroir of Empordà, allowing the production of distinctive wines that reflect the landscape and climate of the region.

About the Wines

Mas Oller is located in a privileged location between the sea and the mountains, influenced by the northern wind, the tramontana, and a diversity of soils including clay, sand, and slate. This project conceptually and geographically unites Northern Catalonia, Empordà, and Languedoc, producing expressive and fresh wines. The estate boasts 17 hectares of vineyards in production, with red varieties such as Garnacha, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, and white varieties such as Picapoll and Malvasía.

The vineyards surround the house, and the grapes are manually selected both in the vineyard and then in the winery. All musts undergo cold maceration to achieve the maximum expression of aroma and color. Mas Oller's philosophy focuses on recovering the winemaking tradition of Empordà with a modern interpretation of wine.

Seeing the grounds of this winemaker was very interesting and fun. The tour guide was wonderfully accommodating and a wealth of info. They weren't harvesting at the time of our tour, but the tasting we got was definitely worth the lack of action on the processing floor.
We're not really what I would call informed wine drinkers, but for us, the wine was fantastic. We bought a couple of bottles and have really enjoyed drinking them since we've been back in the US.
Definitely worth the stop if you're near. Source: google Clint Lunsford
