Merlaj
About the Winery
Merlaj winery was built on the heritage of our ancestors who lived in Pezinok, a town where winegrowing and winemaking were always one of the most common ways to make a living. The history of viticulture/ winemaking in our family has started more than 100 years and continues until today.
What does “Merlaj” mean? The name was created from the first letters of our names. Each one of our family members is irreplaceable in our winery. Our varieties of grapes grow in our own vineyards in the Little Carpathians district, and we take care of them personally.
We produce wine with almost no chemicals and without complicated technologies. We try to protect the authentic taste and smell of wine. The whole process, which starts with pressing and ends with closing the bottle, is done by our hands. Wine ages in the cellar under our house.
Merlaj is a combination of love for nature, wine, and family. With every bottle we want to send the tradition, heritage, and environmentally friendly attitude to the whole world.
About the Wines
All our grapes are grown exclusively in our own vineyards within the Lesser Carpathian wine region in Pezinok and are processed by hand. All our wines are produced from our own vineyards, which we tend to manually and have inherited from our ancestors. In the vineyards, we strive to minimize the use of heavy machinery. Composting and gentle treatment of nature are a duty for us.
We are launching a new project to implement biological pest control and explore its impact on achieving higher wine quality. For us, the vineyard is a part of nature that represents a place of silence, hard work, and experiences. Being a winemaker is a unique lifestyle and a cherished tradition
Saint Laurent Cuvée
This wine has attractive color intensity with a smooth taste and strong aroma. It has a higher amount of tannins and acids. It should be served with everyday meals and cheese. Also fits perfectly with pork and game, duck and goose. Serve at 16-19°C. The grapes grow exclusively in our vineyards in Pezinok and the wine is handmade. Our cuvée method is a heritage of our family and ensures the quality and special taste of our wine.
Vitis L. Cuvée
Alibernet is a wine of intense ruby color, often transitioning into deep purple hues. The aroma is full-bodied, pleasant, and distinctive. On the palate, Alibernet is delightfully wild, featuring notes of wild berries with a subtle Cabernet character. The flavor profile is further enriched by hints of herbs and forest fruits.
Alibernet is well-suited for archiving; bottle aging softens and harmonizes its structure of aromas and flavors.
This wine pairs excellently with venison, steaks, and beef or veal in general. From the world of cheeses, we recommend pairing Alibernet with bold, hard cheeses or blue-veined varieties.
Riesling Blanc Cuvée
Welschriesling (Rizling vlašský) is a favorite variety in Slovakia and is highly suitable for cuvée blends. Its characteristics define it as a typical varietal wine with a delicate bouquet. Its aroma of bitter almonds hints at its mysterious, undetermined origins. When grown in lime-rich soils, it develops a subtle fragrance similar to linden blossoms, accompanied by a slightly higher acidity. This wine is ideal for pairing with fish dishes, poultry, white meats, and ham.
Saint Laurent Rosé Cuvée
Initially, this wine is characterized by a delicate strawberry aroma and a unique pink intensity, offering a velvety, full-bodied taste. It is distinguished by a higher level of tannins and a crisp acidity. Saint Laurent Rosé (Svätovavrinecké) is perfect for everyday enjoyment with common meals and cheeses. It is also an excellent match for fish, chicken, and salads, or as a base for various mixed drinks and wine cocktails.
All our grapes are grown exclusively in our vineyards in Pezinok and are processed by hand. Our cuvée recipes are our heritage, elevating both the quality and the character of the wine.
