About Winery and Wines

Quinta da Grimpa is a 5-hectare estate, the result of the steadfast and skilled dedication of four generations of direct descendants of the brothers Manuel and José Costa.

Located in São João da Azenha, a small village crossed by the Portuguese Way of St. James, Quinta da Grimpa was founded by José Costa in the 1930s.

It was continued by Luiz Costa, who began construction on the house and winery in 1971. Today, the estate is managed by Manuel José Costa and João Luis Costa, who remain faithful to the family’s original ideals.

The house and winery serve as an important repository for the study of Bairrada wine history. The finely carved stonework reflects the Neo-Manueline revival style; the stones were hewn in the late 19th century—specifically in 1896—by the same artists who carved the stone for the Bussaco Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.

Quinta da Grimpa also boasts a collection of wine-related memorabilia patiently acquired over decades, including books, ceramics, postcards, antique bottles, corkscrews, and glassware—objects related to wine through either function or decoration.

Additionally, the estate features a library dedicated primarily to the subjects of Vines and Wine.

Our wines are produced with minimal intervention, prioritizing truth and simplicity to allow for the authentic expression of the grape varieties from which they are made.

It was from this philosophy of authenticity that the term 'Vinho Integral' was born right here at Quinta da Grimpa.

This concept—literally translating to 'Whole Wine'—represents a commitment to preserving the absolute completeness of the grape.

By rejecting filtration and subtractive processes other that decantation, 'Vinho Integral' retains the full structure and soul of the harvest, ensuring that the wine in the glass remains an unadulterated tribute to its origins.
