Saó del Coster
About the Winery
Saó del Coster is a winery that works organically and in the spirit of the biodynamy philosophy in Priorat. We respect the cycles of nature and refusse to use herbicides and pesticides at all cost. We offer tasting tours in several languages.
Since its inception, Saó del Coster has worked organically and traditionally: it respects the cycles of nature, carries out biodynamic treatments and the lunar calendar sets the guidelines for its agricultural and oenological work, ploughing with mules and prohibiting the use of motorized vehicles in the vineyards. It is a mystical challenge which seeks to recover a work method practically on the verge of extinction.
From the recovery of abandoned old vines from with low production, together with the purchase of grapes from neighboring producers who share the same values, we produce some 20,000 bottles a year. Small quantities allow full control over the winemaking process. The strength of an exceptional terroir such as that of Priorat allow vines of the varieties, among others, Garnacha and Cariñena, to remain productive even century old.
Our winery is located in a 19th century old house in the middle of the village of Gratallops, where the resurection of Modern Priorat took place.
For the visits, in English, French and German (in addition to Catalan and Spanish), booking in advance is recommended but you can take you chance and knock at our door. It include a guided visit of the winery and/or vineyards, as well as a tasting of our wines.
About the Wines
Saó del Coster works its lands in harmony, so as to express an elegant and honest vision of the Priorat through its wines. They are elaborated with native varieties, mostly Grenache and Carignan, some of which can be over 100 years old. The plots Planassos (vines from 1945) and La Pujada (vines from 1919) are located in the municipality of Gratallops, DOQ Priorat.
The strength of the terroir is present in the wines
Pim Pam Poom 100% grenache,
S der Saó 55% grenache/45% carignan,
Terram 55% grenache/35% carignan, the rest is Cabernet sauvignon and Syrah, 12 months of barrels,
Planassos and La Pujada 100% carignan 18 months of barrel.

Nothing special...
The gentleman is Swedish, he knows how to speak Spanish quite well, although when there was a word he said that we didn't understand, I would ask him about it and the third time, he asked me if I was a Spanish teacher...
Not a single word in Catalan. He didn't explain to us how you're supposed to drink wine, even though I asked him. He only knows about his wines. I thought that in a tasting they explain more or less how you're supposed to drink. 5 wine tastings, 5 sips, because that's what he poured you...
For one of them, he poured one for himself and we had to wait 10 minutes until he finally realized we didn't have any. 5 sips in total, literally...
I knew he wouldn't pour us half a glass, but to go from that to just a sip... the views are certainly profitable for him.
The best part was the charcuterie board, everything was delicious. Although on the webpage, in the comments section, I put that a vegetarian was coming, he didn't see it, because he asked us if we were allergic to anything... but he did ask if we wanted more charcuterie (not wine, of course!) and we said yes, since I personally didn't eat cheese so the other vegetarian person could, and he gave us more.
The whole tour was standing up, and the last room, where he suddenly does 3 wines super fast, in a tiny little room, inside the winery.
Disappointed with the tasting, honestly...
To eat good charcuterie, yes, but bring water because you'll be thirsty from how little you'll drink...
Very good!
Maybe give an intro for people who don't know as much, about the types of grapes, the winemaking process and show a plot with vines.
Interesting introduction to the wines of Priorat
Patrick, the owner, conveyed his passion in a very enjoyable way, explaining the history of these wines and what makes them so special and unique. Being a very small group, just four people, the experience was very personalized and pleasant.
We tried five very different wines and, even without prior knowledge, we could clearly appreciate their quality. It was a very enriching experience that allowed us to learn, enjoy, and further awaken our interest in the world of wine.
We leave very grateful and eager to do it again. Without a doubt, a totally recommendable experience.

Wonderful tour and tasting
We were new to the old Carignan grapes and particularly enjoyed those wines and blends. For a casual guy, his attention to detail in the whole shows through. Even the nibble had the best Iberican ham I have had in Spain.
A private and personalized meeting with Patrick
I was left wanting to try the more selective wines, even if I had had to pay a little more.
A great experience in beautiful surroundings
