About Winery and Wines

Nestled in the heart of Italy, Tenuta Grimaldi spans 32 hectares (79 acres) of rolling countryside in Matelica, surrounded by vineyards, oak forests, and cultivated fields. Located along the Esino River, the estate is shielded by the Apennine Mountains, overlooking the valley where the renowned Verdicchio di Matelica DOC is produced.

The estate is deeply connected to history, standing on a hill once known as Torramuni, now called Terra di Mondo. At 570 meters (1,870 feet) above sea level, the site once hosted a medieval watchtower, built to defend the strategic Flaminia Road, the main route to Rome. In 1277, a long conflict between Matelica and Camerino led to the destruction of the tower, yet its ancient stone foundations still remain near Tenuta Grimaldi today.

Founded in 2015, Tenuta Grimaldi was established by the Grimaldi family, who transitioned from the construction industry to agriculture, bringing their vision to life. The project transformed an abandoned rural complex into a thriving winery and hospitality estate. The first vineyards were planted with meticulous soil analysis and geological studies, ensuring that each parcel was perfectly suited for viticulture. Today, the estate balances local economic sustainability with international expansion, producing high-quality wines that express the land's unique identity.

Located on gradually rising hills, the vineyards of Tenuta Grimaldi reach an altitude of 550 meters above sea level, with north and east-facing exposure. The combination of microclimate, altitude, and marl-limestone soils—formed by Cretaceous and Miocene-era marine sediment deposits—creates wines of great elegance and finesse. These unique conditions allow for slow ripening, preserving freshness and complexity in the grapes.

The underground winery is designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, providing a naturally controlled environment for winemaking and aging. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected, followed by whole-cluster pressing. Vinification takes place in wooden vats and stainless steel tanks, with aging continuing in Austrian and French oak barrels.

Verdicchio di Matelica DOC – the flagship wine of Tenuta Grimaldi, Verdicchio di Matelica DOC, captures the essence of the estate’s vineyards. Each vintage reflects the natural conditions of the year, with subtle variations in aromatic expression and texture.

Harvest and vinification: hand-harvested in small containers (18 kg capacity) for careful selection, grapes from each parcel vinified separately, fermentation in stainless steel and Austrian/French oak vats, aging until June before blending, and further bottle aging before release.

Through careful vineyard management and thoughtful winemaking, Tenuta Grimaldi continues to highlight the unique terroir of Matelica, offering wines of purity, elegance, and structure.
