Finca Marañuela: wine, coffee and farming memory in the north of Tenerife

At Bodega Finca Marañuela, in La Perdoma in the Valle de La Orotava, the visit begins in the vineyard and ends in the cellar, with everything in between led by the same person who grows the grapes and makes the wine. You will walk among ungrafted centenary vines trained in Cordón Trenzado, a hand-braided trellis system now declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Government of the Canary Islands, and one of the last examples of pre-phylloxera viticulture still actively practised on Tenerife. Along the way, you will pass arabica coffee plants growing at 400 metres above sea level, one of the northernmost coffee plantations in the world, alongside banana, papaya, tobacco and sunflowers, all part of a living polyculture shaped by the natural farming philosophy of Masanobu Fukuoka. Groups are kept to a maximum of eight guests, and every visit is conducted personally by the producer.

The experience closes in the cellar, where four organic, natural wines ferment spontaneously with no added yeasts, no fining and no corrections, all made from Listán Negro and Listán Blanco, two indigenous Canarian varieties grown on volcanic soil fed by the Atlantic trade winds. No food is included, allowing the wines to speak without distraction. Production at Bodega Finca Marañuela does not exceed 1,600 bottles per year. What is poured in the tasting room is what the land gave that year.

What sets this experience apart in the Valle de La Orotava is not the setting alone, but the absence of distance between the visitor and the source. There are no hired guides, no scripted tours and no separation between the person telling the story and the person who lived it. The visit lasts approximately two hours and is available in English and Spanish.
