Discover the history, architecture, and flavors of Bairrada with a private lunch experience at Quinta da Grimpa, a family-run estate located in the historic village of São João da Azenha, along the Portuguese Way of St. James.
The experience begins with a guided tour of the estate. You will explore the property’s Neo-Manueline revival architecture, featuring finely carved stonework created by the same master craftsmen who worked on the Bussaco Palace. During the visit, you will also discover the estate’s private museum collections, including antique corkscrews, historic bottles, and wine-related memorabilia gathered across generations.
Throughout the tour, a family member will introduce you to Quinta da Grimpa’s winemaking philosophy, shaped by four generations of family heritage and today carried forward by Manuel José Costa and João Luís Costa. This includes the estate’s signature Vinho Integral: a white Chardonnay, produced with a low-intervention approach based on minimal handling and no subtractive processes. This wine will also be served as part of the lunch pairing.
After the tour, you will sit down for a private, relaxed lunch at the estate. The meal is designed to showcase traditional Portuguese hospitality and authentic regional flavors. It is not a formal technical tasting, but the wines will be served with lunch and explained during the visit.
The lunch begins with a welcome buffet of regional appetizers, followed by a traditional cream of vegetable soup. For the main course, you will need to choose one dish from the following options: classic Bacalhau à Lagareiro with roasted codfish, slow-roasted pork loin with potatoes and fresh salad. To finish, dessert includes seasonal fruit, chocolate mousse, and traditional baba de camelo, followed by coffee or tea.
The lunch is paired with 3 Quinta da Grimpa wines: the estate’s Vinho Integral white wine, a Bairrada red wine, and a Brut sparkling wine. Mineral water is also included, while children enjoy the same menu accompanied by soft drinks.

Where we are and how to reach us
Quinta da Grimpa is located in São João da Azenha, near Avelãs de Caminho and Sangalhos, in the municipality of Anadia. The estate is best reached by car and is around 10–15 minutes from Anadia and about 35–40 minutes from Coimbra.
