Panton Hill Vineyard & Winery

Wine maker and Viticulturist Teunis Kwak was born in Holland, raised in Canada and finally settled in Australia. He bought the land that was to become Panton Hill Vineyard and Winery in 1973. The land was a bush block with its share of blackberries, no road access, electricity or water. Teunis began the job of transforming the block almost single-handedly while still working as an Associate Professor in the Earth Science Department of Latrobe University. Although he had no background in building, Teunis did know a good rock when he saw one. Outcropping sandstone from the property formed the major material for his building. Convict mined Grampians sandstone (from the same quarry as parliament house), recycled timbers and Welsh slate (originally ballast in early ships to Australia) are just some of the materials used. The building became a matter of trial and error, research, some common sense and lots of physical perseverance and determination. Teunis made his first wine when he was 14 years old, out of wild black cherries picked in the Canadian forest. Maybe this was a promise of things to come. The first vines were planted in 1977 with the major part of the crop planted in 1987/88.The rocky, dry slopes with little soil have produced tough vines that yield low crop levels. The grape quality is very high, producing fruity, complex wines that do exceptionally well in the cellar. Biological farming techniques are used

TarraWarra Estate Restaurant & Cellar Door

Our cellar door, the latest addition to the estate, is a testament to founder Marc Besen’s legacy. Built into the hillside, it’s another way for us to share the TarraWarra Estate experience. Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects and framed by stone from Castlemaine quarry, it’s the vineyard equivalent of Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole. Light filters through circular skylights into the elongated space, characterised by polished concrete floors and an extensive tasting bar made from the salvaged timber of St. Andrews pier. For $5 a person, guests are invited to sample TarraWarra Estate’s cool-climate bounty under the guidance of winemaker Clare Halloran (the amount is refundable with any bottle purchase made on the day). Towards the rear of the Cellar Door, a timber communal table seating 8 to 14 people can be turned into a private tasting room. Just beyond the glass door behind it is our working wine tunnel. Our Cellar Door exists to be enjoyed. Take your time, learn something and then sit back and enjoy a glass or bottle matched to a cheese board, charcuterie platter or head chef Troy Spencer’s ever-popular seasonal jaffle. Weather permitting; settle in on the deck shaded by native peppercorn trees.

Allinda Winery
(Winery in Nillumbik)

Allinda Winery was established in 1990 by Al and Linda Fencaros, located in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at the northern end of Yarra Valley. Mr. Al Fencaros, the founder of the Winery, was born in a European family that has a long history of wine making. Al’s grandparents commenced wine production in Hungary and later in Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Al’s father migrated to Australia in the early 1960s where he produced wine following his family’s legendary tradition of winemaking practices. Al initially graduated with honors from Melbourne University as an applied chemist, and later on graduated from Charles Sturt University with a second degree in wine science. Strongly influenced by his family tradition in wine production, he worked for a short time as a wine maker in local wineries where he obtained rich experiences. He then founded his own in vineyard and winery in 1990.Ever since its establishment, Allinda Winery has been following its winemaking philosophy of a healthy balance between art and science, adapting or rejecting European practices depending on their suitability to the Australian climate, and his philosophy of creating wines with excellent texture, as well as flavor, and also an ability to mature into complex, world class wines. The foundation of this based on growing grapes of outstanding quality, using purely biological practices. The wines are then hand crafted in small parcels, to produce strictly limited editions of 30,000 bottles of each variety.
