Medhurst Wines is the realisation of the long held and shared vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson to own a property in the Yarra Valley and produce high quality wines. Ross was CEO of Southcorp and drove the company’s acquisition of Penfolds, Lindemans and Wynns in 1990. He has remained passionate about wine ever since. Ross and Robyn Wilson spent years looking for the perfect site and for many reasons they jointly decided on the Yarra Valley. Robyn Wilson spent her childhood here, and the Australian and international status of this excellent cool climate wine region and its incredible beauty, helped make their decision. The Medhurst Vineyard was also particularly chosen for its favourable micro-climate, north facing slopes, good drainage and magnificent aspect. It was planted in 2000 with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. With the sole objective of making the best wine possible, careful vineyard management ensures yields are low, averaging two tonnes per acre and providing intensely flavoured fruit.

When Dr Peter Mc Mahon planted the first vines at Seville Estate in 1972, it marked the rebirth of the Yarra Valley as a premium wine region. By the end of the that decade Dr Mc Mahon and his wife Margaret, along with producers such as Mount Mary, Yeringberg, Yarra Yering, St Huberts and the like were fashioning wines that served to re establish the lofty reputation the Yarra had enjoyed in the 19th century. From its first vintage, Seville Estate quickly established itself as one of the Yarra Valleys finest producers. Surprisingly in a region more renowned for its red wines produced from Cabernet and Pinot Noir, its was the Seville Estate Shiraz that received the most attention quickly becoming one of Victorias most sought after wines Today 35 years after Peter and Margaret started the dream; Seville Estate enters its third phase. A new generation of the Mc Mahon family has also become involved in Seville Estate. Peter and Margaret’s grandson, Dylan McMahon is now the winemaker following the passion ignited a generation before. The Van Der Meulens, who ran their own successful design and construction company G & M Building Group in Brisbane for 18 years, have long been passionate about wine and looked at several wineries around the country before settling on Seville. They bought the property from the controlling group of partners led by CEO Robert Hawkins and winemaker Iain Riggs (from Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley). The Van Der Meulens moved to the winery, located off theMonbulk-Seville Road, in December 2005.

Wine maker and Viticulturist Teunis Kwak was born in Holland, raised in Canada and finally settled in Australia. He bought the land that was to become Panton Hill Vineyard and Winery in 1973. The land was a bush block with its share of blackberries, no road access, electricity or water. Teunis began the job of transforming the block almost single-handedly while still working as an Associate Professor in the Earth Science Department of Latrobe University. Although he had no background in building, Teunis did know a good rock when he saw one. Outcropping sandstone from the property formed the major material for his building. Convict mined Grampians sandstone (from the same quarry as parliament house), recycled timbers and Welsh slate (originally ballast in early ships to Australia) are just some of the materials used. The building became a matter of trial and error, research, some common sense and lots of physical perseverance and determination. Teunis made his first wine when he was 14 years old, out of wild black cherries picked in the Canadian forest. Maybe this was a promise of things to come. The first vines were planted in 1977 with the major part of the crop planted in 1987/88.The rocky, dry slopes with little soil have produced tough vines that yield low crop levels. The grape quality is very high, producing fruity, complex wines that do exceptionally well in the cellar. Biological farming techniques are used

Welcome to Oakridge, a family-owned, Yarra Valley winery, restaurant and cellar door, originally established in 1978 alongside a ridge of oak trees. Pioneering the wine growing region of the upper Yarra Valley, today Oakridge is an award winning winery and an internationally recognised name. Oakridge wines can be found on restaurant menus, in bottle shops and for purchase online, but there is no better place to taste than at our home in the heart of the Yarra Valley; an hour’s drive from Melbourne, in Coldstream off the Maroondah Highway. Today, Oakridge is still a family owned company, supported by the Atlas/D’Aloisio family since 2007. David Bicknell, a man who has been described as “the best maker of Chardonnay in the world” is our Chief Winemaker. In 2012, amongst numerous awards and accolades, Oakridge was voted Australian Winery of the Year in The Age & Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide. In 2013, the winery clinked champagne glasses in celebration of the new Oakridge restaurant and cellar door opening to the public. Designed by architect Denton, Corker and Marshall, the stunning new building solidified Oakridge’s place as a must-visit Yarra Valley destination.

We planted our ‘Contour Block’ just ten years ago but it is situated at the very site where the first selector, W.H. McIntosh, planted his vineyard. The land still bears the imprint of this early vineyard with a series of contours running across the face of the sloping hill. When we came to ‘re-plant’ this block we discovered some of the finest soils on the whole property. Looking at the Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard today it is hard to believe that it started out as a scrub block with a scattering of tin sheds. In 1963 an Italian immigrant family, the Fratins, had dreams of creating a little piece of Veneto here in Australia. They worked hard at clearing the land to make way for their vines and chestnuts. Finally, Don, Lino and Serge Fratin replanted the first vines on Mount Langi Ghiran and in doing so, created the iconic “Langi” Old Block Shiraz. The brothers continued planting vines, adding Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Franc however, not satisfied with just grapes they planted chestnuts, walnuts, hazelnuts and some fruit trees. The grapes were sold to the Seppelts winery in Great Western with just a little kept back for their own purposes. The cellar they built into the side of the hill was a feast for the senses, the rafters sagging with salami, and other smallgoods, and stillage racks holding the new vintage’s wines in barrel.

We are located on a small peninsula on Phillip Island, overlooking the Bay of Western Port with beautiful views of Swan Inlet, Churchill Island and Denne Bight. Purple Hen began in 2001 when Rick Lacey and Maira Vitols purchased the property - 32 hectares of prime grazing land. Planting of vines began in January 2002 with the first vintage in 2004. An on-site winery was established in 2005 and the Cellar Door opened at Easter 2006. In the ensuing years we have expanded the vineyard to its current 7.5 hecatres and established an enviable record for producing elegant and strongly varietal wines – winning over 100 Medals and 20 Trophies at wine shows in Australia. Phillip Island is best known for its tourist attractions such as the penguins, seals and koalas. We hope it will become increasingly recognised for possessing one of the best climates in Australia for the growing of quality wines.

In 1926, Joseph Napoleone migrated to Australia from Abruzzi, Italy, seeking a new life for he and his family. He began working in South Australia, clearing bush for day wages to earn enough money to bring his wife Josephine and their 5 children over from Italy. Though he intended to bring them over as soon as possible, the Great Depression and World War II interrupted, and he had to wait until after the war before they could join him. These were difficult economic times throughout the world, and the local wine industry virtually collapsed. Most vineyards were returned to pasture for dairy, cattle, and sheep, and it wasn’t until the 1960’s that replanting began in the Yarra Valley. Post-World War II, the Napoleone family was reunited, and in 1948 they purchased land in Wandin and began the family business, Red Rich Fruits, as orchardists growing apples. In 1961, Michael Vivien Napoleone (Joe and Michael’s father) planted 2 more acres of orchard on the original 20 acres his father had acquired, and the first generation of Napoleone’s were born in Australia (Josephina, 1960, Joe 1961, Michael 1972). In 1978, as the Yarra Valley wine industry began to wake again, the Napoleone’s purchased the property at Coldstream which was formerly home to the original St. Huberts vineyards and winery. They began planting vines in 1987 and, in the late 1990’s, a modern winery was built on the Napoleone Vineyard here in Coldstream. In 2001, the first range of Punt Road wines was released to the market with great success. Today, the Napoleone family, through their vineyards, winery, orchards, brewery and ciderhouse, are committed to crafting the most exceptional wines, beers and ciders in the Yarra Valley.

At Maddens Rise, our philosophy is to maintain, preserve and where possible, ecologically enhance the natural vineyard environment by embracing the use of ‘biological’ farming practices. Our portfolio of exceptional estate-grown wines is a reflection or our commitment to this core set of values.

Basils Farm sits on the shores of Swan Bay – a shallow, 30 square-kilometre marine embayment at the eastern end of the Bellarine Peninsula in Port Phillip Bay. Matthew Flinders named the bay “Swan Ponds” after its black swans, up to 2,700 of which can be seen in summer and early autumn. It is partly separated from Port Phillip by Swan Island, Duck Island and Edwards Point. Most of the area is included in the Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park as well as being listed as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance. Swan Bay contains a variety of ecosystems that make it environmentally important for water birds and migratory waders. These include salt marsh, intertidal mudflats and vast seagrass beds on which, almost everything living in the bay relies on for food. Although now home to a vineyard, café, cellar door and produce gardens, Basils Farm has an interesting history. Originally owned by the Walpole family, it was the building site for 53 foot 2-masted schooner named ‘Fidget’. In service around Port Phillip Bay from 1869, its use included being a timber and lime carrying barge. The last recorded history of ‘Fidget’ was in 1919 when it went out of register. Its fate is unknown. The farm site has been home to a number of owners since the mid 1800’s. It contained the only dam in the area which was constructed by the State Government for the local graziers and dairy farmers as it was long before mechanical diggers were invented. It became a catch up meeting place for surrounding farmers to water their stock.
