Frome Valley Vineyard is set amongst the hop yards and cider orchards of Herefordshire, tucked into a curve of the River Frome just by Bromyard. The estate produces award-winning still and sparkling wines, cider, and brandy. This is a family-run vineyard, managed as sustainably as possible, and welcomes its visitors on tours and tastings.  The vineyard was established in the early 1990s, one of the first “new wave” of English vineyards and one of the earliest in Herefordshire. Frome Valley Vineyard's wines feature heritage grape varieties from what are now beautifully mature vines! Frome Valley Vineyard runs its vineyard as sustainably as possible focusing a lot on soil health. They believe that healthy soil grows healthy vines, so they are currently experimenting with biochar, a very pure form of charcoal. They hope to find that their “biochar-ed” rows are super healthy and productive whereas their control rows are merely healthy and productive. They are also seeing if wormcast tea can help keep the foliage healthy.

Originally a dairy farm, the first vines – a mixture of French and German hybrids, perfectly suited to the UK’s climate - were planted at Llanerch in 1986 Labelled as “Cariad” wines, meaning Sweetheart or Dearest in Welsh, the wines were well received and proved hugely successful, gaining many awards. The current owners, the Davies family, purchased Llanerch Vineyard in 2010 and after extensive refurbishment, re-opened the property in June the following year. The Vineyard is now fully operational, harvesting between 8 -12 tonnes of grapes each year and producing approximately 10,000 bottle of fine Cariad wine. It is thought the Romans were growing vines here on our slopes some 2000 years ago. During the winter of 2013, we planted 120 vines at the Brading Roman Villa, just 200m down the road to re-join our ancient ties. Of course, English-Wines of that era tasted quite differently and it wasn't until the middle of the 20th century that a few pioneering gents changed history. One of them, Mr Ken Barlow searched the south coast for the "perfect vine growing location", and so began Adgestone Vineyard in 1968. The chalky south facing slopes and almost frost free microclimate makes for an advantage seen in very few English counties. Coupled to that the 6 purpose built subterranean cellars maintaining a steady 11oC, it all makes for an environment where the vines can grow without using insecticides, the juice can ferment and the wine can mature naturally without additives or hi-tech chemistry.

Frithsden Vineyard had been out of use for several years when Simon and Natalie Tooley discovered the site in 2005. Simon Tooley, a BBC cameraman with a passion for wine and his wife Natalie, a fashion designer discovered the vineyard on a map and decided to go and explore. They were four years too late as there were no vines left there. They thought it would be a good opportunity to get it going again and a year later they bought the place. The disused vineyard was bought in 2006. A month later, after lots of research, 6000 vines were planted on the site. The vines are unusual varieties that are specially developed to grow in our cooler climate. Our wine is grown, pressed and bottled in our winery building. We pick the grapes by hand in September and October. The wine is then bottled in March or April.

Camel Valley

When ex-RAF pilot Bob Lindo and his wife Annie planted their first eight thousand vines in 1989, they never dreamed of the phenomenal success they would achieve within 2 decades. They had bought their farm in the heart of the Cornish countryside several years earlier, seeking a change from service life and the perfect place to bring up their young family, and initially farmed sheep and cattle. Each summer they watched the grass turn brown on the sun-drenched slopes of the Camel Valley, and wondered if vines might enjoy such an aspect. Bob ‘did a vintage' in Germany and both took viticulture courses and read every vine and wine book they could find. They built a winery and equipped it with the finest equipment they could afford. Annie is the first to admit the early years weren't easy: ‘We practically lived in the vineyard, doing all the work by hand, and when it came to harvest time it was just us and a few friends for picking, then Bob would stay up all night crushing the grapes. But we loved it, always striving for perfection in the vineyard and the winery, and then we won a medal in the national English Wine competition for our first wine, so we knew we were doing something right.'

Here at Biddenden Vineyards, Kent’s original commercial vineyard, we pride ourselves on being a family run vineyard with the second and third generation of the Barnes family managing the estate. Originally home to a 40 acre apple orchard, the Barnes family started to consider diversifying the farm in the late 1960s as apple prices began to decline. After listening to a feature on the BBC’s Woman’s Hour programme about English vineyards being replanted, Mrs. Barnes was inspired to turn to viticulture. In 1969, one third of an acre of vines was planted and Biddenden Vineyards was born.

There was evidence of a vineyard on the site over 2000 years ago. The Romans took advantage of the south facing slopes and well-drained soil, as we are doing once more. The vineyard is now in the caring hands of the Dawe family who have farmed the surrounding land for over 90 years. Father and son team Ken and Paul look after the vineyard and winery, whilst Ken's wife Lesley manages and caters for the Tea room and shop. Ken and Lesley's daughter Lisa assists in the office and takes charge of the Tea Room and shop at weekends. The name 'Old Walls' has been adopted from its proximity to another place of historical interest, The 'Bishops Palace'. Walter Bronsecombe, a native of Exeter, took over as bishop in 1258, displaying an integrity of character and attention to ecclesiastical duties. He secured a market and fair for Bishopsteignton in 1270, and during the following decade instigated the construction of the Bishop's Palace, the inspiration of the naming of Old Walls Vineyard. All that is left of the 13th century building are some small sections of wall which Ken has taken great interest in helping to restore and keep this Ancient Monument on display for future generations. When you visit us why not take time to see this fascinating insight into Devon's past. The vineyard also has a lovely Tea Room with a covered outside eating area overlooking the spectacular countryside.
