Afianeswines
About the Winery
Inspired by age-long traditions passed on from one generation to the next, Afianes Wines was founded by Nikos Afianes and his wife Maria almost 30 years ago with one dream in mind, to create a space where wine and life are celebrated. By preserving ancient techniques of winemaking and combining them with modern-day practices Afianes Wines boasts an impressive and internationally renowned selection of wine labels.
Today, joined by their 2 children, Konstantinos and Eftychia, this family-owned winery is a local treasure elevating Ikarian wine and welcoming guests from all over the world who want to share moments, experiences, good company, and great wine.
About the Wines
Afianes Wines is dedicated to producing natural, unfiltered wines using biodynamic and organic farming practices. Thirty years ago, the indigenous grape varieties Fokiano and Begleri were little known outside of Greece, but Nikos Afianes sought to change that. Through experimentation and innovation in harvesting and vinification techniques, the winery helped bring these unique varietals to the international stage.
Located on the highlands of Ikaria, the Afianes estate offers a harmonious blend of tradition, nature, and winemaking. Grapes are stomped by foot in a granite wine press and fermented in clay jars buried underground, preserving an ancient method that enhances the wine’s earthy, layered tones. Some of the estate’s wines are aged in French oak barrels, while others undergo fermentation in stainless steel containers. All wines are fermented with wild indigenous yeast, bottled unfiltered and unfined, with minimal sulfites added during bottling.
Afianes is a sanctuary for both wine and nature lovers, offering a glimpse into the island's rich viticultural traditions while showcasing innovative approaches to natural winemaking.
