Brokenwood Wines

Established in 1970, Brokenwood Wines began as a weekend project by three Sydney-based solicitors—Tony Albert, John Beeston, and James Halliday—and has since grown into one of Australia’s most respected wine producers. Located in the Hunter Valley, at the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges, the winery was founded on a 10-acre plot originally intended to become a cricket ground, but instead planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Over the decades, Brokenwood has evolved from a small, passion-driven venture into a leading name in Australian wine, known for its commitment to quality and regional expression. While maintaining its Hunter Valley roots, the winery has expanded its sourcing to include premium vineyards across Australia, always focusing on producing wines that reflect both terroir and craftsmanship.

Brokenwood is particularly renowned for its Hunter Valley Semillon, considered one of the region’s benchmark expressions, celebrated for its purity, longevity, and ability to develop complexity over time. Alongside Semillon, the winery produces high-quality Shiraz, both from Hunter Valley vineyards and cooler-climate regions, offering a diverse interpretation of the variety.

The portfolio also includes Chardonnay and other varietals, crafted with a balance of tradition and modern winemaking techniques. Brokenwood wines are known for their elegance, consistency, and ageing potential, reflecting the winery’s evolution from a small-scale project into a flagship producer of Australian wines.
