5 stars for Cantina Canaio

9/1/23
We visited the family run vineyard Cantina Canaio, between Cortona and Montepulciano for a wine tasting and lunch to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. What a fantastic event, it far exceeded our expectations.
Firstly we had the place to ourselves so we felt more like special guests rather than tourists. Marzia spoke excellent English and gave us a great background to the history of the vineyard and the renovations which the family have undertaken over the last 10 years or so. Then followed a tour of the winery and cellar and a description of the wine making process which was very informative and interesting.
After this we were shown into the dining room for the wine tasting and lunch. We had a 3 course meal which was described as a light lunch complete with descriptions of every course in Italian by the lovely and enthusiastic cook. Thank goodness Marzia could translate. The wines were all delicious and we each had different favourites - mine was the rosé. There is no pressure to buy any wines but we couldn’t resist stocking up with a few bottles to take back to our Villa.
What a great way to spend a few hours in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. Can thoroughly recommend - you won’t be disappointed.

The setting was stunning and our tour guide Marcia was excellent. We enjoyed the tour and learnt a lot as well. The wines we sampled were lovely and the accompanying food was delicious, in fact I am planning to try to recreate the pasta! We enjoyed looking at the book of photographs showing how the farmhouse had been recreated.

About Winery and Wines

Our passion for farming and grape growing comes from afar and is well rooted in our family. After producing grapes for decades, in 2014 we decided to start making our own wine in line with the production choices that other wine producers of Cortona have implemented in the last few years. The idea of creating a winery arose in 2012 when the old family farm was partitioned. We decided then to cultivate mostly Syrah grapes in our vineyards and to leave a small part of the estate to Merlot vines. We renovated the country house that have belonged to our family since the 1600s and brought it back to its original splendour by keeping all its characteristics unchanged. At the same time we started building up the winery. The name “Canaio” derives from the nickname given to one of our ancestors who lived in the family estate and was called “Canaio” because of his great passion for hunting and thus for the high number of hounds he had. In small-medium sized company like ours, the production philosophy cannot be other than focusing on a single goal: quality. Every choice of our company is extremely important and implies absolute dedication and attention to every single detail. No shortcuts are allowed, neither in the vineyard nor in the winery. Every vintage is interpreted as it is, without any form of homogenization.

We proudly produce 100% Syrah and 100% Merlot wines. The area around Cortona offers the ideal terroir for these two international varieties, allowing the grapes to express themselves fully while also offering, with every sip, the remarkable taste of Tuscany. We cannot say that our wines taste better than the others. Neither can we say that they are like the others. We can certainly say that every wine of Cantina Canaio expresses its uniqueness through the marvel of its cosy and personal character. Because every wine has its own story, but every story must be accompanied by the right wine.
