About Winery and Wines
Cantina Giuseppe Sedilesu is a family-run winery founded by Giuseppe and Grazia, and today it is managed by their three children and their families. The winery was established 40 years ago with the purchase of their first hectare of vineyard in Mamoiada, Sardinia. Initially, the family produced and sold bulk wine to nearby villages. In 2000, when the children took over the business, they decided to bottle and label their Cannonau, curious to see if the same flavors and aromas they had grown up with would be appreciated by the broader wine market.
The decision proved successful, and over the next decade, the family doubled its wine production and expanded their cellar facilities. Today, they are active members of the local wine community, participating in initiatives like the Mamoiada Winemakers Association (Mamojà) and the Consorzio di Tutela del DOC Cannonau di Sardegna, a cooperative aimed at protecting the DOC Cannonau brand. The family is also involved in developing wine tourism through projects like La Strada del Vino Cannonau, bringing greater attention to their heritage and the unique terroir of Sardinia.
Cantina Sedilesu is located in the heart of Mamoiada, a region known for its unique terroir, where the soil is primarily composed of decayed granite, formed through natural corrosion processes. These soils, which are low in nitrogen but rich in potassium and phosphorus, create ideal conditions for the production of high-quality wines. The estate spans 15 hectares of vineyards, with the vast majority dedicated to Cannonau, the signature grape of the region. A smaller portion, about 5%, is planted with a rare white grape variety known as Granazza.
The vineyards, spread across the Muruzzone and Garanunele areas, sit at an average altitude of 600 meters above sea level, providing an optimal environment for grape cultivation. One-third of these vineyards consist of vines over 50 years old, with one exceptional vineyard boasting vines that are 100 years old. These older vines are complemented by younger vineyards, ranging between 3 and 15 years old.
The vines are cultivated using the alberello technique (bush vines), a traditional method where the vines are planted closely together, allowing for efficient use of space and better grape quality. The older plots follow a spacing pattern of 90 x 170 cm, while the newer vineyards adopt a spacing of 80 x 200 cm. New vineyards are planted either through massal selection, using scions from the oldest and most promising vines, or by using modern grafting techniques to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and the distinctive character of the estate’s Cannonau wines.
