Casa de Algar

Casa de Algar is a family project with over a century of history, where the tradition of winemaking has been passed down through several generations. The estate is located about 40 km from Porto, on the southern bank of the Douro River, in the Paiva sub-region. Set on a south-facing hillside with a favorable microclimate for vineyards, the property is surrounded by diverse vegetation and orchards, including citrus trees, figs, apples, pears, and native species such as oak and cork oak — creating ideal conditions for producing Vinho Verde.

Casa de Algar also offers a range of wine tourism experiences, including wine tastings, vineyard picnics, and guided visits to the winery. The restored farmhouse provides rural accommodation, allowing guests to stay on the estate, explore its trails, and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings.

At Casa de Algar, winemaking reflects both heritage and creativity. The estate produces wines under two distinct labels — Casa de Algar and Pata da Burra — each expressing a different facet of the vineyard and its surroundings.

Casa de Algar represents the heart of the estate. These wines reflect the character of the Paiva sub-region and the family’s long-standing connection to the land. Crafted with care from grapes grown on the property’s south-facing slopes, they aim to express freshness, balance, and the vibrant personality typical of Vinhos Verdes, while honoring the estate’s traditions and natural environment.

Pata da Burra brings a lighter spirit to the portfolio. While still rooted in the same vineyards and philosophy of quality, these wines embrace a lighter, approachable style, designed to be enjoyed in relaxed moments and shared experiences — wines that celebrate the convivial and joyful side of the Vinho Verde region.

Together, the two labels reflect the diversity of Casa de Algar’s vineyards and the family’s vision: wines that respect tradition while welcoming new interpretations of the region.
