About Winery and Wines

Differences in altitude, soil and orientation make each of our vineyards unique, and this is reflected in our wines. Our philosophy is to ensure that our wines express this authenticity, typicity and essence, while fully respecting the environment.A passion that runs in the family In the 12th century, Carthusian monks came to the Priorat region from France, bringing with them the grape varieties with which the region is identified today: Grenache and Carignan. The Marco family, wine growers since the 15th century, were already present in Porrera at the time of the first census taken in Catalonia in 1497, as well as in the later census undertaken by the Count of Floridablanca in 1787. In the late 19th century, their vines were struck by the plague of phylloxera that was infesting vineyards across Europe, and the family abandoned the region for Barcelona, while keeping their lands in Porrera. In 1898, Ramón Marco Abella was born in Porrera. A man of entrepreneurial spirit and great fortitude, he decided to revive what had once been one of the best vineyards in the region. Just over a century later, his grandson David, together with his wife Olivia, decided to take things a step further by building a modern winery. The couple abandoned their professional careers in order to dedicate themselves full-time to their passion. The result of their efforts is the Bodega Marco Abella, a winery that contributes to the prestige enjoyed by Priorat wines the world over.
