Celler Clos Figueras & Restaurant Les Figueres
(Winery in Falset)
During the 1980’s a group of inspired enthusiasts fell in love with the area and saw the potential to produce very great wines in the Priorat. The group was led by René Barbier, whose father had owned a wine shipping company in Tarragona, and Alvaro Palacios from the Rioja. In 1989 their first wine was produced with three other friends in an abandoned chicken farm outside the village of Gratallops. The presence of very old Grenache and Carignan vines in the unique slate / schist soils called “llicorella”, helped by some recent plantings of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, showed the way to make wine of world class quality. It was not long before the international wine press was falling over themselves to expound the virtues of this “rediscovered” territory, putting Priorat back on the map as one of the great wine producing regions of the world.

DIARY
Today the region enjoys the coveted “Denominacion de Origen Calificada” appellation which in Spain is only shared with the Rioja.
Christopher Cannan, with his export orientated wine shipping company, Europvin, based in Bordeaux, had already discovered the potential of the Priorat back in 1983 when he was given a bottle of the 1974 vintage Priorat from the Scala Dei winery by a small retailer in San Fransisco. Tasting the wine that same evening with a Californian wine maker, it turned out to be excellent and extraordinarily good value at $ 4.00 a bottle !
Shortly after Christopher met Manuel Peyra, owner of Scala Dei, and started exporting these delicious wines to various countries including the U.S.A. and Japan. At the time Scala Dei was the only single privately owned estate exporting the wines of Priorat.
Later in 1988 Christopher met Alvaro Palacios at the New York Wine Experience. Alvaro informed Christopher of his plans and invited him to dinner in Logroño where he enthusiastically
CLOS MOGADOR - Vi de Finca Qualificada -
(Winery in Falset)
Clos Mogador is the consequence of many generations. These generations have been passionate, have lived the moment with a keen sense of intuition, and have enjoyed many experiences and emotions. Great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, ourselves, our children and our grandchildren-all of us have enjoyed, we still enjoy and continue to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of wild rosemary, mixed with the scent of thyme and lavender. We smell the soil after rain and the clay, baked hard in the summer months when rain is scarce. The rocks are heated by sunlight, an intense smell mixed with the scents of spices and ash from burning the branches during winter pruning. We live with slow buzzing bluebottles at harvest time, the cicadas sing song and on a cool night, the frogs sing heartily, joining in with the crickets. Spring flowers and we awaken to birdsong. The birds, in their promiscuity, help pollinate and produce new fruits that are harvested. The insects fly from flower to flower, creating unique creatures, fleshy berries with wonderful flavour, and perfume that will never again be experienced. The vineyards are dotted with olive trees, fruit trees and also not far away, some holm oaks with one or two pine trees that interrupt our view. Wrinkled figs and textured almonds, fruit surrounded by bushes of all kinds, flowers blooming in every season, saturating the air with scents throughout the year... I remember my son, René when he was three years old, spending his days with a group of friends, selecting the best wild berries and putting them in a sand bucket from the beach. I remember my wife, Isabelle, helping him select the best figs to dry or for eating immediately, or my other son, Christian, who is unable to live in any other place on this planet than here, surrounded by all kinds of nature ... "To make good wine," says my oldest son, "you have to choose the best grapes, the ones you would eat..." and this cannot be done in large fermentation vats, it has to be don
Celler Vall Llach
(Winery in Falset)
Premium quality
Cellar Vall Llach was founded at the beginning of the 1990s by the singer Lluís Llach and the notary Enric Costa in Porrera, one of the nine villages in the south of Catalonia that together form the Qualified Designation of Origin (D.O.Q.) Priorat.
Vall Llach vi de finca Qualificada Mas de la Rosa, Porrera vi de vila de Vall LLach, Idus de Vall Llach, Embruix de Vall Llach and Aigua de Llum de Vall LLach are the names of its wines, and the celler – celler is Catalan for winery – introduced its first vintage to the market at the end of the year 2000. Since its inception, the cellar’s processes and their application have been governed by rigid adherence to two guiding principles: rigour and quality.
Cellar Vall Llach is fortunate in possessing a selection of magnificent old estates – the so-called trossos – whose 60- to 90-year old Cariñena and Garnacha vines assure an exclusive must for its wines. The produce of these stocks is complemented by the careful purchase of grapes from farms selected for their quality from amongst the oldest and most reputable of the Porrera and Torroja areas.
In the early 90s, with the strategy of further refining its wines, Cellar Vall Llach planted a number of vineyards with varieties that serve to embellish the traditional Garnacha and Cariñena of the trossos – principally the Merlot, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Syrah.
A balanced combination of tradition and cutting-edge technology is strictly applied to all of the creative processes that culminate in the wine you drink: cultivation, harvesting, fermentation, maceration, pressing, ageing and bottling.
Celler Marco Abella
(Winery in Falset)
Differences in altitude, soil and orientation make each of our vineyards unique, and this is reflected in our wines. Our philosophy is to ensure that our wines express this authenticity, typicity and essence, while fully respecting the environment.A passion that runs in the family In the 12th century, Carthusian monks came to the Priorat region from France, bringing with them the grape varieties with which the region is identified today: Grenache and Carignan.
The Marco family, wine growers since the 15th century, were already present in Porrera at the time of the first census taken in Catalonia in 1497, as well as in the later census undertaken by the Count of Floridablanca in 1787.
In the late 19th century, their vines were struck by the
plague of phylloxera that was infesting vineyards across
Europe, and the family abandoned the region for Barcelona,
while keeping their lands in Porrera.
In 1898, Ramón Marco Abella was born in Porrera. A man
of entrepreneurial spirit and great fortitude, he decided to
revive what had once been one of the best vineyards in
the region.
Just over a century later, his grandson David, together with
his wife Olivia, decided to take things a step further by
building a modern winery. The couple abandoned their
professional careers in order to dedicate themselves full-time
to their passion. The result of their efforts is the Bodega
Marco Abella, a winery that contributes to the prestige
enjoyed by Priorat wines the world over.
Mas de l'Abundància
(Winery in Falset)
The estate has about 8 hectares of which there are 4 planted on the rock of “llicorella” type, which is very typical in the lands of the Priorat and gives these wines their special personality.
The types of grapes that are produced are Grenache and Carignan, both coming from prefiloxeric clones, and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is an type of grave of low performance imported from the best French vines. All three varieties are planted at the “slides” and the “patches” of the estate.
Ultimately, the planting in this estate responds to the particular situation of the territory and its organoleptic characteristics, a fact that allows us to obtain high yields of quality grapes that, after careful elaboration, confer great wines.
Our way of working and our philosophy are controlled carefully at all times and by professional experts. This is the only way we can guarantee the top quality of our wines.
Celler Vermunver (Gènesi)
(Winery in Falset)
All our vineyards are to be found within the municipal boundaries of Marçà, in the south of the Priorat region. They are divided between various locations within this area, all with different orientations. In total, there are 23 hectares of vines, some grown on land owned by the company, others on rented plots.
The vines are mainly of the grape varieties known as ‘Garnatxa’ (Grenache) and ‘Carinyena’ (Carignan), local to the region. The majority, around 75%, are vines of between 70-80 years old, with a ‘Lot’ root stock, and grafted with the best shoots of the local vines of the area. We also have a small quantity of Merlot and Syrah varieties about 20 years old.
The soil is slightly calcareous and the placing of the vines, planted by our grandfathers in the twenties and thirties, was magnificently done. The total production of Celler Vermunver is around 70,000 kg from which small amounts are carefully selected from the different sites.
An anecdote relating to the selection of these plots is that on the municipal map of Marçà they form a figure that resembles the constellation of Orion, and for this reason we call them the ‘Vineyards of Orion’.
With an annual production of around 5,500-6,500 kg, the cellar has created as the first product of the winery, Génesi Selecció.
