About Winery and Wines

The Grignano Estate’s history spans centuries, from its Bronze Age origins to its prominence during the Etruscan and Roman periods under the name Castello di Vico. It was later owned by the De Medici family in the Middle Ages, with Catherine de Medici gifting the estate to her trusted banker and confessor, Bishop Marquis Enrico Gondi. In the 1970s, the Inghirami family, leaders in the Italian textile industry, acquired the estate and expanded it to 600 hectares. Today, Tommaso Inghirami leads the estate, focusing on innovation, quality, and organic farming.

The estate includes 50 hectares of vineyards, 200 hectares of olive groves, 100 hectares of arable land, and 250 hectares of woodland. The heart of the estate is the Grignano Winery, where tradition and modernity meet. In 1999, the acquisition of the Pievecchia Winery allowed for further expansion. Since 2018, the estate has undergone significant investments in the vineyard, wine cellars, and olive oil mill, producing organic wines that reflect the distinct terroir of the Valdisieve region.

The Inghirami family’s vision, combining historical legacy with modern winemaking techniques, is paving the way for the estate's future success, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and quality. The new organic wines produced at Grignano aim to set a benchmark in the Valdisieve area, showcasing the estate’s commitment to preserving the land’s heritage while embracing innovation.

The Grignano Estate covers over 600 hectares, including over 40 historic farmhouses in the renowned Chianti Rufina area. The estate focuses on cultivating high-quality grapes such as Sangiovese, Colorino, and Canaiolo Nero, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and white varieties like Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Chianti, and Chardonnay. Their wines are organic, with the estate certified since 2008.

Grignano’s winemaking philosophy revolves around sustainability, ensuring their wines reflect the rich terroir of Chianti Rufina. The microclimate, southern exposure, and soils rich in limestone and galestro contribute to the elegant character of their wines, particularly the Sangiovese-based Chianti Rufina Riserva, Poggio Gualtieri. Known for its long aging potential, this wine highlights the estate’s dedication to quality and tradition.

The estate also produces high-quality organic extra virgin olive oil, which is part of the prestigious Laudemio Consortium, known for producing some of the best olive oil in Tuscany. The olive groves, spread across 200 hectares, benefit from the same sustainable practices as the vineyards, resulting in oils with very low acidity and a distinctive taste.

In addition to wine and olive oil production, Grignano offers a unique experience with its historic buildings, including the Grignano Villa, featuring an elegant grand hall with a capacity for 500 guests, ideal for events and ceremonies. The estate’s private chapel, along with its Pieralisi olive oil mill and modern wine cellars, showcase the blending of ancient and contemporary elements. The estate also includes extensive woodlands, a truffle-rich environment, and a small hunting reserve.

The Pievecchia Winery, acquired by the estate in 1999, is an ancient parish dating back to the 16th century. It stands as a testament to Grignano’s deep connection to Tuscany’s historical and winemaking heritage, further expanding the estate’s vineyards and production capabilities. The unique combination of tradition, sustainability, and innovation continues to define the Grignano Estate as a leader in the Chianti Rufina wine region, offering wines that balance elegance, character, and longevity.
