About Winery and Wines

The first red wines appeared in 2005 (production of 5000 liters), made in a small borrowed cellar, under the brand name Foral de Portimão Colheita Escolhada, Reserva and the monovariety Petit Verdot. In 2007, already in its own cellar at Quinta da Penina, wine was produced under the brand João D´Arens, in homage to the writer and first Algarve President of the Republic, Manuel Teixeira Gomes, who in his book Agosto Azul, refers to the vineyards existing on the site of João D´Arens.

In 2008, the first white wine appeared with the Arinto and Crato Branco (Síria or Roupeiro) grape varieties. In 2009, the first Rosé was produced, from the Petit Verdot variety and a new red Foral de Portimão DUO, as it was made with the Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet varieties and without aging in wood. In 2012, the Quinta da Penina brand was launched, with the Quinta da Penina Reserva red 2010.

Since 2005, production has been increasing, reaching a peak in 2018 with 110,000 liters. The new winery (inaugurated in July 2021) is located in  Parque Industrial do Pateiro, in Parchal (Lagoa) and its location is equidistant from the production areas, Quintas da Penina and Palmeirinha. Guided tours are carried out, with a description of the entire production process and wine tasting.

The Quinta da Penina project began in 2000 when cooperatives in the Algarve began to close and small farm producers appeared.

Wines under the brands Foral de Portimão and Quinta da Penina, produced by Quinta da Penina Vinhos come from vines carefully planted in 2 different terroirs; Quinta da Penina (Portimão) and Quinta da Palmeirinha (Lagoa).

Some of the best Portuguese red grape varieties were chosen, such as Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Trincadeira, Castelão, Negra Mole and whites like Crato Branco (Síria), Arinto, Verdelho, Sercial, Rabigato, Viosinho that allied or not to the French Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Petit Verdot and white Viognier give rise to excellent quality red and white wines.

Quinta da Palmeirinha has been producing wines since the 19th century and probably has the oldest vineyard (1942) in economic production in the Algarve, with the Negra Mole variety.
