Renčel boutique wines

Winery in Karst, Primorska, Slovene Karst

About the Winery

Renčel Winery is a family-run estate located in Dutovlje, a small karst village in the far south-west of Slovenia, close to the Italian border. The homestead, marked by the number 24, has been home to the Renčel family for generations and is surrounded by vineyards rooted in the region’s distinctive red karst soil, known as terra rossa.

For many years, the family lived in close harmony with nature, practicing agriculture and animal husbandry, while wine production remained at the heart of their work. Over time, they decided to focus entirely on viticulture, expanding their vineyards across ten micro-locations covering more than four hectares. Their philosophy has remained unchanged through generations: to work with love and respect for nature, wine, and people.

The winery is deeply shaped by the unique character of the Karst, a limestone plateau stretching between the Gulf of Trieste, the Vipava Valley, Brkini, and the Soča Valley. This wild yet welcoming landscape is defined by rocky terrain, mysterious caves, pine trees, strong bora winds, and fertile red soil rich in minerals and iron oxides. These natural elements give the wines their identity, freshness, structure, and unmistakable connection to the territory.

About the Wines

At Renčel Winery, wines are produced with an artisanal, natural, and biodynamic approach. The family works with great respect for biodiversity, allowing the vineyards to form part of a balanced natural ecosystem. The vines are cultivated in harmony with the soil, plants, animals, and microorganisms, encouraging resilience and healthy growth without unnecessary intervention.

The vineyards are located between 270 and 310 meters above sea level and are planted in a north-south direction to ensure optimal sunlight. Alongside the native varieties Teran and Vitovska grganja, Renčel also grows Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Malvasia, and other varieties. The grapes are harvested by hand in September and October, with careful attention to ripeness and quality.

Winemaking at Renčel follows a minimal-intervention philosophy. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts from the vineyard, often prepared through a pied de cuve. The wines are not temperature-controlled during maceration and are not filtered, allowing them to preserve their natural character and authenticity.

The winery is especially known for its macerated white, or orange, wines. Each variety is treated according to its own character: Malvasia and Vitovska grganja are usually macerated for 10 to 14 days, while Sauvignon is macerated for a shorter period. White wines mature in wooden vessels for at least two years, red wines for at least three years, and sweet wines made from dried grapes may age for eight years or more.

Renčel produces a wide range of wines, including orange, red, rosé, sparkling, and sweet wines. Their wines are elegant, expressive, and full of personality, reflecting both the unique Karst terroir and the winemaker’s deep understanding of the land.
