Tenuta del Travale

Founded in 1993, Tenuta del Travale is the result of a visionary transformation of an abandoned estate in Travale di Rovito, just 9 kilometers from Cosenza. The estate's revival began with the replanting of its historic but unproductive vineyard in 2007. Spanning five hectares across terraced hillsides, the vineyard now focuses on growing 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio, two varietals perfectly suited to the region’s high altitude and sun-drenched slopes. The estate’s vineyards, nestled among centuries-old olive groves, benefit from the optimal winemaking conditions created by the daily sunshine and significant temperature fluctuations brought by the nearby Sila. At Tenuta del Travale, every aspect of viticulture is carried out by hand due to the steep terrain, adhering to a philosophy that emphasizes quality over quantity. The estate is dedicated to crafting wines that honor the land’s rich history, drawing inspiration from the artisanal traditions that have shaped this unique corner of Calabria.

Tenuta del Travale specializes in producing wines from Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, two grape varieties historically linked to Sicily but with deep roots in the Calabria region. These grapes were once renowned for their ability to enhance the flavors of Sangiovese and Cabernet, earning them high regard in the 19th century before production declined. At Tenuta del Travale, the focus is on reviving these prized varietals through an artisanal, hands-on approach to winemaking. Under the expert guidance of agronomist Stefano Dini and oenologist Emiliano Falsini, the winery produces low-yield, high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. Nerello Mascalese, in particular, shines with its complex, robust flavors, shaped by the estate's sun-drenched slopes and cool, mountainous breezes.
