Tenuta Le Velette

Winery in Lake Bolsena

About the Winery

Tenuta le Velette is a historic family-run estate that has been nurturing the art of winemaking since 1877, when brothers Sante and Luigi Felici first acquired the property. Perched in the shadow of the majestic cliff of Orvieto, the estate spans approximately 100 hectares of vineyards and 4,000 olive trees, all cultivated on soils of exclusively volcanic origin. This unique terroir, combined with generations of passion and dedication, creates a truly special winemaking environment. A visit to Tenuta le Velette is an immersive journey through time, where the history of this extraordinary place comes alive. Guests can explore the hand-dug tuff caves, ancient concrete cisterns, and Etruscan barrel cellar, all set among centuries-old linden trees and historic avenues. The deep connection to the land and the rich traditions of the past make Tenuta le Velette not just a winery, but a destination that offers an unforgettable experience for those who appreciate history, culture, and exceptional wines.

About the Wines

The wines of Tenuta le Velette are a true reflection of the rich volcanic soils and the storied landscape of Orvieto. The estate's flagship wine, Orvieto Classico DOC, is crafted in adherence to traditional methods, standing as a pillar of the winery's production. This wine exemplifies the harmonious balance and minerality that the volcanic terroir imparts. In addition to this classic expression, Tenuta le Velette has expanded its portfolio to include a variety of monovarietal wines and both white and red blends. Each wine is meticulously crafted to highlight the unique characteristics of the grapes grown in these nutrient-rich soils. Whether it's the crisp and vibrant whites or the structured and elegant reds, every bottle from Tenuta le Velette captures the essence of this remarkable region. These wines are not only a testament to the land from which they come but also to the generations of winemakers who have poured their passion into each harvest.

Very beautiful winery, where the wine rests in Etruscan caves. The owner is kind and helpful. Good wine tasting.
I would recommend extending the visit to the estate and the villa, with its adjoining church.

Wine experience
The wine tour and tasting was amazing. The family history was so nice to see, as the granddaughter was giving the tour. She had such knowledge about the history, the wines, the distribution and just an overall good hostess. We even had a little extra guest, Umbra the family’s dog who followed us around too through the site. The grounds were beautiful and it was so nice and peaceful being there. You had such a great view of Orvieto from the main house and the wines were amazing. We kept comparing every wine we had after that day, back to this one. The food pairings were amazing too! Thank you so much!

Interesting experience, excellent wines
Interesting experience. Our guide, well-prepared, showed us a real, ancient (Etruscan) cellar dug into the tuff. The bottling procedure was interesting. The wines tasted were excellent, accompanied by flavorful cured meats and cheeses.

Fantastic Experience
After visiting 6 years ago for my parents 50th wedding anniversary, my family of four returned bringing my wife’s two sisters and their families. We enjoyed it so much we wanted to share it with others. Our group of 18 (with two toddlers) was accommodated easily. The wine, the vineyard, the food, the location and the people were all amazing. The booking process with easy even with our group exceeding the limits on the site. The proximity to Orvietoade made a post vineyard trip to sight see easy.
If one fancies a particular wine, the vineyard can help ship home.

Very good wines
We had tastings of some good range of wines. It was very casual and just two other people on the tour. The charcuterie was ample and very tasty.
Perhaps a bit more history of the family to help us connect more personally to the experience
