Tolaini Societa' Agricola s.r.l.

Winery in Chianti, Chianti Classico

About the Winery

The Winery
The vines are between 300–450 meters (1,000ft–1,500ft) above sea level. This location provides a large diurnal range, giving the wines both more  elegance and freshness. The 50 hectares of vineyards were planted in spring of 2000. Before planting the vines, Tolaini conducted a “zonation,”  evaluating which grape varieties would grow best in each respective microclimate, the zonation considered soil type, drainage and exposure. Grape varieties that were best suited to each area were then planted. The intention at Tolaini is to find the perfect synthesis between old and new. Respecting the land by farming sustainably and organically and then maintaining tradition in our winemaking process, while also using more modern techniques, like our optical sorting machine at harvest. Our philosophy is to grow the best grapes because you cannot make a great wine from mediocre grapes. Our goal is to make wines that reflect the great terroir of Castelnuovo Berardenga.

The Etruscans lived in central Tuscany over 2000 years ago. The Tolaini logo “Y” is an Etruscan letter “T” chosen as a tribute to these historical  inhabitants and is sculpted into a 3-meter-high rock that stands at the front gate of the winery.

About the Wines

- TOLAINI CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG

Grape varieties: 95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo

A new version of Chianti Classico, made with grapes grown on sandy soils. Only concrete ageing for a vibrant, fresh and juicy version of Chianti Classico.

- VALLENUOVA CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA DOCG

Grape varieties: 100% Sangiovese

Vallenuova is the name of the estate and is still today the formal address of the winery. The Vallenuova vineyard surrounds our winery.

- VIGNA MONTEBELLO SETTE GRAN SELEZIONE CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG

Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese

Montebello is the vineyard surrounding the Tolaini home adjacent to the winery on the estate. This is a single vineyard, a “cru”, 100% Sangiovese from the 2 hectare parcel “7” of this vineyard.

- MELLO IGT TOSCANA

Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese

Planted in 2001 at roughly 700 meters ASL, Mello is located in Gaiole and is the highest altitude vineyard in the Chianti Classico DOCG. The soil is Macigno, a well draining sandstone which imparts finesse and elegance to this cru’s Sangiovese.

- AL PASSO IGT TOSCANA

Grape varieties: Equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon

Al Passo is the name of the circular forest on our estate and is loosely translated as “at the passage.” The forest houses an Etruscan tomb dating back over 2500 years. This prominent landscape feature is the highest point of our Vallenuova vineyard.

- VALDISANTI IGT TOSCANA

Grape varieties: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Cabernet Franc

The chalice with a serpent is a symbol of Saint John the Evangelist and is taken from a painting that hangs in the small church that borders this vineyard. The image was chosen for this label to honor this historic land that bears his name.

- PERLUI IGT TOSCANA

Grape variety: 100% Cabernet Franc

PERLUI is a wine dedicated to Pier Luigi “Louie” Tolaini, the founder of Tolaini estate. His dream was to produce the best wine from this unique terroir. PERLUI, 100% Cabernet Franc, which was his favorite varietal, is the realization of this dream.

- LEGIT CABERNET SAUVIGNON IGT TOSCANA

Grape variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine is bottled as a single varietal to showcase its unique harmony of distinct terroir, robust bright fruit and lush round tannins. A truly LEGIT Cabernet Sauvignon. The label is the 1963 album cover of the iconic musician Thelonious Monk’s concert “Live in Milan”.

- PICCONERO IGT TOSCANA

Grape variety: 100% Merlot

Picconero is produced only in the best vintages. The name Picconero comes from Picco which is the Italian word for “peak” and nero, the Italian
word for black, which Italians used several decades ago to refer to red wines

Tasting
The winery was very beautiful and clean, they welcomed us in a professional manner. The explanation of the cellar was detailed and interesting, the sommelier was very knowledgeable and immediately put us at ease. Each wine was a journey to discover the story of Mr. Tolaini. Overall it was a beautiful tasting, we highly recommend it to those who are not experts!
To our taste, we really liked the Legit and the Valdisanti.

Pleasant experience
Small but very beautiful winery to visit.
Excellent quality and affordable prices to be able to bring home some memory of the tasting.
Recommended also for those who are from the area and don't come from very far away.

PERFECT EXPERIENCE
It is a beautiful building in the middle of a unique setting. The winery inside is beautiful and spotless. The lady who explained everything to us and conducted the wine tasting couldn't have been better. The wines were delicious.
We thought everything was perfect.

Knowing how to share your passion!
My wife and I were guests at the Tolaini winery, we were welcomed by Mr. Walter Santini and, right away in a simple and direct manner, he made us feel at ease, in a context that we love but is still a bit unknown to us, and he immediately managed to convey the passion and precision with which this winery works.
At the end of the visit we went down to the barrel room to proceed with the tasting, and I must give my compliments because the 6 wines for tasting were a pleasure for all the senses.
Truly, compliments.

Wonderful tour and tasting with knowledgeable and friendly guide
Delicious wines, cheeses and meats, with even gluten free bread options for the olive oil, was a lovely way to learn about the winery, its founder, the area’s terroir, and much more! We will be happy to visit again.
