Zumbo Vini
About the Winery
Zumbo Vini began in 1972 when Salvatore Zumbo launched an innovative viticultural project by planting one of the first specialized vineyards on Mount Etna at approximately 750 meters above sea level. With his initial five hectares, Salvatore pioneered modern viticulture in the region, moving away from the traditional alberello technique. His goal was to restore the reputation and prestige of the DOC Etna wine production area, which had been in decline for many years.
Today, sisters Erica and Ramona proudly carry on their grandfather Salvatore's legacy, running the Zumbo family business with a conservative philosophy both in the vineyard and the cellar. For them, this approach has become a way of life, rooted in respect for tradition and quality.
The mission of the Zumbo family is to highlight the unique characteristics of Nerello Mascalese, striving to achieve an unparalleled level of quality in its expression. There are no shortcuts or trends followed; these wines are crafted to reflect the specific vintage and are designed to age gracefully, offering those who enjoy them a unique and enduring sensory experience over time.
About the Wines
In pursuit of his vision, Salvatore Zumbo planted 14,000 wild vines in Contrada Santo Spirito, grafted with buds from centenarian vineyards that had been cultivated on the volcanic slopes of Etna. This decision, made at a time when many were abandoning their vineyards, firmly established the Zumbo family as one of the historical producers of Etna wines.
Contrada Trimarchisa is located near the Alcantara River at 450 meters above sea level, in the renowned Verzella area. The soil is volcanic, with clay and limestone portions. This unique combination of soils, along with the river’s influence, allows for the production of wines that display exceptional finesse and structure.
Contrada Santo Spirito benefits from excellent sun exposure, which enhances the ripening of the grapes, while good ventilation along the slopes reduces the risk of fungal diseases by minimizing water retention and shortening leaf wetness duration. The soil is sandy, rich in minerals and organic matter, with a skeleton-like structure. During the summer and near harvest, the significant temperature variations between day and night play a crucial role in increasing the polyphenol content in the grapes, further enhancing the quality of the wines.

Una piacevole sorpresa!
Se posso, consiglio solo di portare gli ospitò anche fuori dalla struttura per un bel giro tra le vigne.

True Taste of Etna
In addition to the wonderful wines, Zumbo vineyards put out an amazing spread of regional cheeses, meats, tomatoes, olive oil soaked bread, and various freshly made antipastos and marinated/grilled vegetables, most of which were grown ant the winery and prepared by one of the owners (Erica).
We were well educated on the area by Oreste who not only took us on a tour of the facility but spent time explaining the various types of grapes being produced.
The vineyard itself is amazing - row upon row of grape vines with white and red grapes nestled next to each other. One one side is a view of Mt. Etna and the other side a vista of mountains cresting skyward. Olive trees as well - and the special trees that appear on the wine labels.
It is a special place.
