Zumbo Vini

Winery in Etna

About the Winery

Zumbo Vini began in 1972 when Salvatore Zumbo launched an innovative viticultural project by planting one of the first specialized vineyards on Mount Etna at approximately 750 meters above sea level. With his initial five hectares, Salvatore pioneered modern viticulture in the region, moving away from the traditional alberello technique. His goal was to restore the reputation and prestige of the DOC Etna wine production area, which had been in decline for many years.

Today, sisters Erica and Ramona proudly carry on their grandfather Salvatore's legacy, running the Zumbo family business with a conservative philosophy both in the vineyard and the cellar. For them, this approach has become a way of life, rooted in respect for tradition and quality.

The mission of the Zumbo family is to highlight the unique characteristics of Nerello Mascalese, striving to achieve an unparalleled level of quality in its expression. There are no shortcuts or trends followed; these wines are crafted to reflect the specific vintage and are designed to age gracefully, offering those who enjoy them a unique and enduring sensory experience over time.

About the Wines

In pursuit of his vision, Salvatore Zumbo planted 14,000 wild vines in Contrada Santo Spirito, grafted with buds from centenarian vineyards that had been cultivated on the volcanic slopes of Etna. This decision, made at a time when many were abandoning their vineyards, firmly established the Zumbo family as one of the historical producers of Etna wines.

Contrada Trimarchisa is located near the Alcantara River at 450 meters above sea level, in the renowned Verzella area. The soil is volcanic, with clay and limestone portions. This unique combination of soils, along with the river’s influence, allows for the production of wines that display exceptional finesse and structure.

Contrada Santo Spirito benefits from excellent sun exposure, which enhances the ripening of the grapes, while good ventilation along the slopes reduces the risk of fungal diseases by minimizing water retention and shortening leaf wetness duration. The soil is sandy, rich in minerals and organic matter, with a skeleton-like structure. During the summer and near harvest, the significant temperature variations between day and night play a crucial role in increasing the polyphenol content in the grapes, further enhancing the quality of the wines.

A wonderful experience discovering Sicilian wines
I gave this experience to a friend as a graduation gift and it was a much-appreciated gift.
The owner explained to us in detail the subdivision of the Etna territory based on the wines produced and the rules that producers must adhere to.
Furthermore, she gave us an in-depth tour of the cellar, letting us taste the wines in the various stages of fermentation.
The lunch was also excellent, presented as a tasting of local products, but very substantial (we couldn't finish everything and I didn't ask for the pasta dish that was included).
The owner also gave us a tour of the nearby vineyard.
Everything was wonderful.

We were welcomed cordially by the owner and she told us in detail about the birth of the cellars and their evolution.
The cheeses, cured meats and the various dishes that accompanied the tasting were excellent and abundant.
We tasted 5 good types of wine.

A pleasant surprise!
My husband and I enjoyed a tasting at the Zumbo sisters', a gift we received for our anniversary! It was a pleasant experience. The passion that the girls put into their work shines through in every word. The wines were very pleasant and the food was truly beyond all expectations. I sincerely recommend it!
If I may, I would only suggest also taking the guests outside the facility for a nice tour among the vineyards.

An experience not to be missed
A warm welcome at a family estate, where the story told by the passionate owner transported us. The meal, made with local and organic products, was succulent. The wines are of a very high standard. Be careful, however, the wines are so good that you risk leaving with a few less pennies.
Don't miss out!

An exceptional wine tasting in an exceptional place
We were welcomed by Oreste, the oenologist, and Erica, the owner, at the foot of Etna in their winery. They explained their origins and their progress. We tasted the wines from the tanks to the bottles while they told us about the process and we finished with a tasting of local products paired with their wines in a castle. What more could you ask for! Is there a score higher than 10? Well then, more.
Everything was above our expectations.

Authenticity and passion
A simple, genuine, and no-frills tasting. The first impression, far from the typical idea of a classic tasting room, was immediately replaced by the professionalism and warmth of Erica, who with passion welcomed us, pampered us, and involved us in the fascinating story of the Zumbo family business which, thanks to the grandfather's intuition, also opened up to wine production, now more than fifty years ago. The service is good, the wines excellent (the CiuriCiuri rosé and the Settantadue white were delicious) and the food samples excellently tell the story of the splendid territory of Castiglione di Sicilia and of the mighty mass of Etna, yesterday magnificently snow-capped.

Fantastic Host and Experience
I believe it was the best kind of experience my wife and I had at a vineyard. Angy and Erica were amazing while explaining their processes. And the "banquet" after? Fantastic. There are many options to taste from the menu offered, + the wine produced by the winery.

True Taste of Etna
An informative, delicious and scenic experience. Each wine was balanced having singular and complex notes with a unique and distinctive finish. Mineral quality abounds.

In addition to the wonderful wines, Zumbo vineyards put out an amazing spread of regional cheeses, meats, tomatoes, olive oil soaked bread, and various freshly made antipastos and marinated/grilled vegetables, most of which were grown ant the winery and prepared by one of the owners (Erica).
We were well educated on the area by Oreste who not only took us on a tour of the facility but spent time explaining the various types of grapes being produced.

The vineyard itself is amazing - row upon row of grape vines with white and red grapes nestled next to each other. One one side is a view of Mt. Etna and the other side a vista of mountains cresting skyward. Olive trees as well - and the special trees that appear on the wine labels.

It is a special place.
