Visit and Tasting of Clay Pot Wines at Adega José de Sousa in Alentejo
Here is what's in store for you
The experience at Adega José de Sousa begins with a guided tour led by a specialized guide, starting in the educational vineyard, where the main grape varieties used in winemaking are introduced. The visit continues through the modern winery, home to 44 stainless steel tanks, and the archaeology room, where visitors can see ancient artifacts found at Monte da Ribeira Estate, including a nearly 5-meter-high menhir.
The tour concludes at the historic Adega dos Potes, a unique winery where 114 clay amphorae are still in use, preserving an ancient winemaking tradition. This space provides insight into how clay pot vinification enhances the character and complexity of the wines produced at Adega José de Sousa.
Following the tour, a tasting of three clay pot wines is offered. This includes one white wine and one red wine fully vinified in clay, as well as a red wine partially vinified in clay and aged in barrels. The tasting is complemented by water and crackers, offering a pure expression of this historic winemaking technique.
