About Winery and Wines

Pierre & Bertrand Couly is a renowned family-owned winery located in the prestigious Chinon appellation, where they cultivate 23 hectares of vineyards dedicated to Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. With a lineage of winemakers dating back to the 15th century, the Couly family has deep roots in the heart of Saint-Louans. In keeping with their commitment to both tradition and innovation, the family built a modern cellar at the entrance of Chinon, symbolizing the perfect blend of heritage and contemporary winemaking. Today, Vincent Couly, the son of Bertrand, continues this legacy, bringing a fresh perspective to the estate.

The winery’s philosophy centers around the expression of terroir, with each plot of the Chinon appellation, such as Le Parc, La Haute-Olive, and Blancs Closeaux, vinified separately to capture the unique character of each locality. Agroecology, agroforestry, and eco-grazing play a key role in their sustainable farming practices. Visitors to Pierre & Bertrand Couly can experience the diverse landscapes of Chinon, its rich history, and the forward-thinking practices that define this exceptional winery.

At Pierre & Bertrand Couly, winemaking is an extension of the careful work done in the vineyards. Each plot is vinified separately using indigenous yeasts and no sulfites to preserve the purity of the grapes. Stainless steel vats, which offer the most neutral environment, are used for fermentation and aging to maintain the authentic expression of the Chinon terroir. The wines are not aged in barrels to ensure that the unique qualities of the soil and micro-climates of each vineyard are fully revealed.

The estate releases its wines only after a careful aging process, with certain cuvées taking up to five years to mature. The new cellar, constructed in 2010, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to be energy efficient, with a roof covered in terraced vines that help maintain a constant temperature year-round. This eco-friendly approach extends to their production of grape juice, honey, and jams, adding to the variety of products visitors can enjoy.

Pierre & Bertrand Couly offers an impressive array of wines, including red, white, and rosé from the Chinon appellation, Crémant de Loire sparkling wines, and a 100% Chenin Blanc. Their dedication to sustainable viticulture and respect for the land make each bottle a true reflection of the unique Chinon terroir.
