About Winery and Wines
Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of the Adua farm, a property that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when the Maremma marshes began to be drained. The 15 acres (6 hectares) of Morellino di Scansano vineyards began to produce grapes and a new cellar was built. In 2001, the property was enlarged with the acquisition of another farm, Keeling, located in Baccinello. To the old but prestigious existing vineyards were added new ones, and today the winery owns more than 21 hectares of vineyards under the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
The philosophy of Poggio Argentiera combines the work in the vineyard with the highest respect for the vine and its production cycle. Since 2009, the management of Poggio Argentiera has been converted by following the principles and practices of organic farming and breeding, to find the perfect balance between the vine and the surrounding environment.
Since 1997, Poggio Argentiera has flourished in a region nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Monte Amiata, in the heart of the Maremma. Spanning 22 hectares, the estate is guided by a philosophy of deep respect for the vine and the land.
The Adua vineyard is located adjacent to the Maremma Natural Park, with the beach at Marina di Alberese just 3-3.5 miles (5-6 kilometers) away. The soils here are predominantly sandy and loamy, with minimal clay and organic matter. In contrast, the Keeling vineyard, situated on the hills of Scansano, benefits from higher elevation. The natural slope of the land, ideal exposure, and stony soil composition create vineyards with outstanding potential and distinctive characteristics.
Poggio Argentiera’s red wines, particularly the expressions of DOCG Morellino di Scansano, stand out as true protagonists of the estate. These wines, nurtured by the unique soils, offer freshness, drinkability, and good longevity. The estate also produces wines from non-native varieties, which, thanks to the exceptional terroir, develop a unique character.
The white wines, led by the indigenous Vermentino, are the result of careful grape selection and an interpretation that emphasizes freshness and drinkability, capturing the essence of the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, whose waters lie just beyond the vineyards.
