Beautiful tastingroom
Everything was very clean, and the place is easily reached by car, only a few minutes downhill from Assisi..
We really recommend this place if you’re in to tasting wines that are more than average.

Ottima esperienza.

About Winery and Wines
SAIO is the vineyard of Assisi, where the Mencarelli family has been crafting fine wines and extra virgin olive oil just 800 meters from the iconic St. Francis Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning 20 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, our estate is a haven of natural beauty and artisanal production. Here, we focus on small-scale, handcrafted wines that respect the rhythms of nature and celebrate the rich heritage of Umbria. Visitors to SAIO can immerse themselves in the history and traditions of this unique region through personalized wine tastings, handmade local food, and a variety of outdoor activities. Whether you're visiting as a couple, with friends, or bringing the whole family, SAIO offers a welcoming atmosphere with experiences that cater to all ages. We also love animals and are happy to welcome your dog to enjoy the vineyard with you. Come and discover the authentic flavors of Umbria in the heart of Assisi.
The wines of SAIO reflect the distinctive terroir of Assisi, where the pink and white stones of Mount Subasio create pebbly, permeable soils ideal for producing high-quality wines. Our vineyard benefits from the cool Tramontana winds that blow at night, ensuring a significant temperature variation that enhances the aromatic qualities of our grapes. The orientation of the vineyard rows is carefully managed to ensure optimal sun exposure, while meticulous hand-trimming of the vines and leaves helps to concentrate the flavors in the fruit.
Harvesting is done with precision, and the grapes are brought to the cellar within three hours of picking for a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the natural aromas, while aging in oak barrels and bottles is closely monitored to bring out the unique characteristics of each vintage.
Our portfolio includes wines like Colle Asio, Colderba, Campo delle Grazie, Eremo, and Legenda Maior—each a testament to the elegance, finesse, and rich heritage of the Assisi terroir. These wines are not just products but expressions of a land steeped in history, made with passion and care by those who know it best.
