About Winery and Wines
Sassotondo is housed in a unique cellar, entirely dug into a "tufo" cliff on the estate's farmland. The last room of the cellar, located 14 meters underground and 30 meters from the entrance, is where the barrels are stored. This natural underground environment provides the perfect conditions of humidity and temperature for aging wine.
The journey began in 1990 when Edoardo Ventimiglia, a documentary filmmaker in Rome, and Carla Benini, an agronomist from Trento, left their city lives behind. Edoardo’s family had a deep connection to the film, with his grandfather serving as Hitchcock's first cameraman, while Carla longed to work in the open air. Slowly, their passion for city life faded, and they turned their attention to the land.
When they first arrived, the estate had only one hectare of vineyard, a house in disrepair, and neglected land. But by 1997, after much restoration, they had their first harvest and produced their first bottle of wine. Each day, they continue to refine their project, working closely with their collaborators and oenologist, Attilio Pagli, to bring their vision to life.
The land, the ancient cellar carved into the tufo, and the San Lorenzo vineyard with its sweet Ciliegiolo grapes were irresistible, and Sassotondo was born from their shared passion for winemaking and the land.
Sassotondo's vineyards, spanning 12 hectares, are located within the appellations of Bianco di Pitigliano, Sovana, and Maremma Toscana. About 9 hectares are dedicated to red varieties, including Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Teroldego, and Merlot, while 3 hectares are planted with white varieties such as Trebbiano, Greco, and Sauvignon.
The winery's old cellar is carved into a "tufo" cliff, with the barrels stored 14 meters underground. This natural underground environment provides the ideal conditions for aging wine, thanks to the perfect balance of humidity and temperature.
Sassotondo’s wines aim to capture the essence of the land they come from. The unique combination of local grape varieties and the presence of the tufo stone gives the wines their distinctive character. They are elegant, naturally concentrated, sapid, and infused with spicy notes, reflecting the power and mystery of the surrounding environment.
