Tenuta Santa Caterina

Winery in Monferrato

About the Winery

Tenuta Santa Caterina is nestled in the gentle hills of the “Colli Divini”, in the heart of Monferrato, within the municipality of Grazzano Badoglio, Piedmont. This area, known for its rich viticultural heritage, is also home to historical monuments that reflect its ancient origins.

Registered as an Agricultural Estate in 1737, Tenuta Santa Caterina was revitalized by Guido Carlo Alleva in the 2000s, as he returned to his mother’s homeland to continue the family tradition of viticulture. The estate was meticulously restored with the help of local artisans, bringing new life to the palace, porticoes, Italian gardens, stables, and the Historic Cellar with its brick vaults and Infernotto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a cellar carved into the tuff, used for wine storage.

The estate’s 20 hectares of vineyards were rejuvenated following principles of symbiotic agriculture, using organic fertilization and microbiological consortia. Native Monferrato grape varieties such as Grignolino, Freisa, Barbera, and Nebbiolo were replanted, alongside Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The estate's philosophy centers on meticulous attention to every phase of production, blending ancient wisdom with contemporary methods, and respecting the environment. The result is a range of wines that reflect the unique character of Monferrato.

About the Wines

The wines of Tenuta Santa Caterina are produced exclusively from estate vineyards, grown with a precise territorial imprint. Each wine is a cru, and each bunch is cared for during long months with constancy and patience. In the cellar, the fermentations are carried out with the aid of only the indigenous yeasts already present on the skins of the grapes. The wine rests in the cellar until the optimal moment for its consumption. Attention is considered indispensable to bring the soul of the landscape and the passion of the winemaker into the glass. The refinement in wood in the historic cellar, and subsequently in the bottle, are essential to obtain wines that continue to express themselves at their best over time.

INTIMATE AND WONDERFUL TASTING
We visited the Tenuta Santa Caterina with a very knowledgeable guide, appreciating the wonderful outdoor spaces and the cellars, learning a lot of interesting information. Finally, the tasting was very intimate and refined, with the opportunity to ask all our questions, tasting some wines of the highest value accompanied by artisanal crackers. I would recommend it to anyone, excellent quality-price ratio, fantastic experience.
