Even though vines in Latium were already present beforehand, it was under the Roman Empire that this territory started developing its own wine culture. After the empire, these traditions were carried on by the popes of the Renaissance. In the early 1900s, the most well-known wines of Latium were Castelli Romani, Frascati, Marino and Est! Est!! Est!!!, all obtained from native vines. Nowadays, the history of Latium’s viticulture is changing thanks to an interesting work of requalification of its autochthonous vines.
