About Winery and Wines
Manilva, a picturesque coastal town in Málaga on the Costa del Sol, is home to historic Moscatel de Alejandría vineyards that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. These ancient vineyards face threats from urban development and decreasing profitability, but a project is underway to protect them by producing Nilva wines and sustainable wine tourism.
The guided tour begins with a visit to the CIVIMA (Centro de Interpretación Viñas de Manilva). In its three themed rooms — Viticulture, Enology, and Harvest — visitors can explore the rich winemaking traditions of Manilva. The experience also includes a visit to the boutique winery, where the crafting of Nilva wines is showcased.
At Viña del Peñoncillo, a certified organic vineyard, participants can enjoy a tasting of 3 wines, paired with local tapas such as ham and cheese, while taking in stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. This experience, set in a unique environment, has been awarded the Skal International Award for Best Sustainable Tourism Project, offering an unforgettable insight into Manilva’s viticultural heritage.
At Nilva Winery, the Muscat of Alexandria variety is cultivated in the 1.8-hectare Peñoncillo vineyard, situated just meters from the Mediterranean Sea. This location benefits from a strong oceanic influence due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar and Africa. The vineyard consists of 60-year-old vines, grown on hills of albariza soil, with very low yields of less than 1 kg per vine. The vines are dry-farmed and certified organic.
The wines produced include:
- NILVA Original: A dry white made from the Muscat of Alexandria variety, aged on fine lees for 6 months. It has 12% alcohol and a production of 2,800 bottles in 2021. Awarded Best White Wine in the Denomination of Origin Sierras de Málaga.
- NILVA Ecological: A dry white, also made from Muscat of Alexandria, aged on fine lees for 6 months. It has 12.5% alcohol and is certified organic by CAAE. The 2021 production was 1,900 bottles, under the Denomination of Origin Sierras de Málaga.
- NILVA Sweet: Made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes, which are sun-dried for 12 days to achieve partial dehydration. It has 13% alcohol and a limited production of 400 bottles per year.
