4 Wonderful English-speaking host (Lorenzo)Very quaint wine tasting; felt very personalized and genuine. I loved that it wasn’t an enormous business and it felt like we were stepping into the family’s lifestyle, not a large-scale industrial winery. The host spoke very clearly in English and was able to answer all questions clearly in English as well. Accompanying snacks were delicious and helped bring out flavor of wines.

5 Perfect evening! (Giulia)We had a really great experience at Dell’ Erba with Giulia and her family and will definitely go back there. We could taste three of their excellent white wines accompanied by plenty of bread and dips, formaggi and salumi. Everything was very delicious and the food locally sourced. After the tasting we got a small tour around the vineyard with some more interesting insights into their winemaking process and philosophy. We felt their passion for winemaking and sharing that with their guests in every detail! Thank you for that special evening!

Hills of Savona: Good to know

What visit in Hills of Savona?

The “Hills of Savona”, or Colline Savonesi, refers to the hilly inland territory behind Savona on the Ligurian Riviera. This wine area spans upland slopes that rise above the coastal plain, blending maritime influence with mountain touch. Though not widely known beyond Liguria, these hills host a modest but distinct wine tradition that expresses the coastal‑hills interplay, offering wines that reflect both sea breezes and rugged terrain.

Wine tourism in the Hills of Savona is intimate and off the beaten path. Many wineries are small and may operate by appointment, preferring to show visitors the vineyards, the local varietals, and traditional cellar techniques. Some estates offer tastings on terraces, rooftop views, or sunset tastings in vineyard settings. The experiences are often paired with local food elements—small bites, olive oil, focaccia—that evoke the Ligurian hinterland.

Which food to taste in Hills of Savona?

Culinary expression in the Savona hills bridges Ligurian coast and rural uplands. Seafood remains present—anchovies, fish soups, marinated fish in coastal zones—but inland, meats, game, mushrooms, and herbs appear more. The white and rosé wines of the area pair naturally with fish pastas, vegetable soups, Ligurian delicacies, while the reds suit richer meats, stews, and local cured meats. Focaccia, pesto, local olive oil, and Ligurian herb sauces help tie food and wine together harmoniously.

Which wines to taste in Hills of Savona?

The Colline Savonesi IGP (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) designation covers wines from the Savona hills and authorizes both white, rosé, red, passito and novello types. Key grape varieties in the area include Lumassina (a local white grape) and Granaccia (aka Alicante / Grenache), which is used in reds.Key grape varieties in the area include Lumassina (a local white grape) and Granaccia (aka Alicante / Grenache), which is used in reds. The vineyards seat mostly on east‑ or southeast‑facing slopes at altitudes between roughly 400 and 700 m, on steep gradients of 20–50%, in soils of sandstone, limestone, and turbidite clay.

Which is the best season to visit Hills of Savona?

The optimal period to visit is late spring through early autumn. In spring, the hills are lush and temperatures mild. Summer brings warmth tempered by altitude and sea breezes, making vineyard walks pleasant. Harvest in late summer/early fall brings energy to wineries. Winters tend to be quieter; some producers may limit public access. The higher altitude and slope help reduce frost risk compared to the lower plains.

What things to do in Hills of Savona?

Base yourself in Savona or one of the coastal towns, then drive inland into the hills (e.g. toward Quiliano and beyond). Plan tastings in the late afternoon or early evening to enjoy golden light on the terraces. Request comparative tastings between white, rosé, and red styles to understand how the hills’ microclimates affect the wines. Pair visits with hikes in the landscape, explorations of mountain villages, olive groves, and local food markets. Stay in agriturismi or hillside lodgings to soak in the views and local ambiance. Because the area is underexplored, many real gems await spontaneous discovery.
