About Winery and Wines
Located in the heart of Reguengos de Monsaraz, Adega José de Sousa is a truly unique winery, where tradition and innovation come together to produce exceptional wines. Dating back to 1878, this historic estate maintains one of the rarest and most ancient winemaking techniques in the world, using 114 clay amphorae for fermentation—an approach introduced by the Romans over 2,000 years ago.
After acquiring Casa Agrícola José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes in 1986, José Maria da Fonseca fulfilled a long-held dream of producing wine in Alentejo, on an estate rich in history and prestige. Today, the winery preserves its heritage with a traditional cellar, located below ground level, featuring amphorae and two treading mills, while also embracing modernity with a state-of-the-art facility equipped with 44 stainless steel tanks. This remarkable blend of ancestral techniques and contemporary winemaking makes Adega José de Sousa an extraordinary place to explore the artistry of Alentejo wines.
The estate produces a prestigious selection of wines, combining the historical influence of amphora fermentation with modern vinification methods. Among its most notable labels are José de Sousa, José de Sousa Mayor, and the top-tier J de José de Sousa, each reflecting the rich terroir and winemaking expertise of the region. Additionally, the winery crafts the Montado brand, further expanding its portfolio of high-quality wines.
The vineyard’s diverse soils and climate conditions allow for the cultivation of both indigenous and international grape varieties, ensuring wines with depth, complexity, and balance. Whether made in the traditional amphorae or stainless steel tanks, each wine captures the soul of Alentejo, offering a journey through time and taste.
